Installing Artificial Grass in the Backyard

Bob talks with Greg Goehner of New Grass. Because of the amount of shade in the backyard and the two young boys in the house, the homeowners could never grow a healthy lawn. The synthetic grass being being installed features two different types of blades. There is a soft monofilament and a twisted fiber that adds a little cushioning to the grass. It's soft, durable, and doesn't require any mowing. The fibers are made of polyethylene and backing is made of polyurethane. NewGrass also has a protective U.V. coating to prevent fading or decomposition. Water filters through the turf at a rate of 30 gallons per hour. The NewGrass is laid out and cut to shape with one seam that is barely visible once the fibers have been brushed and lifted. The perimeter is staked to the ground and the fibers are broomed up. NewGrass lasts 10 years or more and comes with a warranty. It costs about $4.99 per square foot.

" And at the other end of the little backyard we've got a totally different concept. Greg gators -- from newgrass and when we started this project back here and remember this family has two little kids fort five years old. And they eat their rough on him but they're also two big trees back here in lots of shade and you couldn't grow grass so that is the reason that you're seeing newgrass going down here. And Greg let's talk about it is a lot of people have a stigma for artificial turf products. And that it's kind of rough on your knees are you think about in terms of football fields this is a new approaches that."

" Yes it is Bob -- newgrass product we're putting in here features two different types of blades we have a soft. Mono filament in a twisted fiber that adds a little cushioning to the product it's soft it's durable it is yeah. Children love it which -- Arthur -- that you don't him the you don't have to mow it no more you don't have to water it. Exactly yeah now what is it made out of these fibers are polyethylene. Knife and the backing is -- urethane. It's very durable it has a UV coating. That has a warranty of ten years and what about water peddling on -- you have to worry about I mean does the water filter through it it filters through at a rate of thirty gallons per hour so that's not a problem. Now we're going to lay out the new grass cut it to shape. We're gonna have one seam that's nearly invisible upon completion okay. Then we'll stake the perimeter so it doesn't lift up. Broom up the fibers. And you're set for ten years or more of a beautiful newgrass -- does it come with a warranty it does yes."

" Okay well Greg this looks like their regular kind of seeming process that you do wall to wall carpet inside the house."

" Yes it certainly is. So we're getting it prepared to do our initial scene of the two pieces. No with the pieces put together you can see we have -- nearly invisible seam. Once we do the final grooming. It'll be nearly impossible to see what work we've. -- would about the cost of this the cost for this newgrass rye is 499. Square foot insulation is customer project specific. Well this is a very specific project in the works really well thanks well thank you very much okay."

Planting Bulbs and Overseeding the Lawn
Planting Bulbs and Overseeding the Lawn

Bob watches as Kelly Brothers plants bulbs while Ruth Foster explains how to do it well. The small, blue scylla are planted in the front fo the garden, with taller alium behind. Foster shows the pointed end that should aim up and suggests that they be planted as a group, in bouquets, so they will blossom in groups of color. Bob uses a bulb planter to prepare holes for the bulbs. These bulbs, from DutchGardens.com can be purchased as good quality, double-nose, and bargain bulbs. Foster tells Bob that the deeper they are planted, the less likely they are to split. If they are planted too shallow, there will be no blooms in the second year. Once planted, the bulbs will be mulched and left to sleep for the fall and winter. The turf that was damaged during construction is ready to be reseeded. Foster suggests a relaxed approach to lawn planting, using perennial rye and fescue scattered over the surface and raked in. Foster stresses that a "freedom lawn" is mown high and overseeded in the fall and again with the melting snow. Foster uses fescue for shade, blue grass in sun, and perennial rye everywhere.
