" You had a chance to walk around the small property what would you say about the homeowners in terms of what their -- are not avid gardeners. -- you you probably you're standing right here on this corner right match and that's why you sit right that is correct. Well that's what looks like -- the homeowners number one work. Playing during the week yet and they don't have but and I had any time whatsoever so they just came out bottom few plants put him in the ground and watered them maybe once or twice a week and this is what you did after a few years a mishmash yes. Now the plan here is to create a new backyard terrorists screamed in with a a whirlpool spots feature right around here -- their bedroom. You'll notice that I think that's their bedroom bathroom area where they've got the talk -- biscuits and the privacy fence. So that's the key here they're they're looking for privacy so that they can. Not worry about the neighboring families in neighboring two story houses. And I see that some of the neighbors landscape includes a lot of these other tall palms."

" Lakers Phoenix -- those are Rica's off in the distance that is correct yes sir Rico's unit from wings yet. They've done a great job of covering that area of -- and would you use constitute try to retain privately definitely definitely we live in south Florida in here in south Florida. You've gotta have these ponds we've got to take away from the shade trees. And what I would do here is very simple I would create a hedge and instead of creating ahead with a typical. I biscuits for the typical bikers let's create ahead with -- all through this are here again we've got this wall here made out of wood. Where it -- tonight and I sort yeah so we want to do is create a hedge here and give the blockage the client over here. And again to the same thing here cover this whole wall so you instead -- goes zigzag with the correct I would never put -- And upon them straight angle it always go and zig zag formation. What I do -- I brought this book for your. And the palms I would use just want I would use the queen -- Queen palms are very typical here in south Florida area and and a lot of a lot of canopy you -- Dick Armey on the head on this on the queen palms when mature and went on in a twenty footer. Would be anywhere between ten to fifteen feet. Spread so yes you can see there it's a nice bread and a nice coverage to give you some private and you don't need to many bombs went the other wanted to the other one I would uses and I don't like to use a -- just. One straight specimen right I like to give the customer. A variety of variety of sponsors of the fox tail and this is called the fox tail very popular now here in south Florida. Because it acclimate number one very well for the climate here and tea it's very unique it's -- the tale of fox tell us what's called -- fox."

" And it grows to be thirty feet high and of that -- create quite a dramatic effect here now here you've already got this that the -- Lara right that is correct snap. And so you've already got tons of screening not very. -- number I don't like trip -- very much being the very dirty. -- they drop a lot of lead drop a lot of leaves the homeowner will be breaking leagues year round on these guys really. They tend to grow very erratic -- and to destroy whatever is underneath. Underground they have a lot of -- at the root system right here. So you're saying that they're pretty invasive they can disturb us. -- sewage pipes service thing I would do it that is -- out and and junket things can really yes I'd I don't. Well there's grow so quickly in south Florida that sometimes when somebody says -- that jacket it and that -- you know it's not what's this this is a mango. Hot mrs. -- south Florida Hispanics love the most this is in bloom right now and eventually these turn into the mangled roof that is correct."

" One problem that I see is that. The windows the way they've been designed our. At eye level so that when you're inside the kitchen working you don't see up but you see directly over corrected it here and again all you're seeing is. A wooden fence that's not terribly attractive. Well the thing we can do here is very simple this is we don't you know we don't have a lot of air to work with number one. And we've got a shade tree above we've got a man may forestry now that is a very tropical fruit right that is correct we'll mystery get very large yes it will get very large and homeowners have to. Here must be trimming -- trade and here they have no control -- on the neighbor's land whatsoever that so we can't put anything tall appear I would I would want to cover this would wall. We would go various types of -- so binder the answer. Now what -- will grow in a shady area -- the -- will grow very well for instance in the meant to build balloons a very nice colored -- I would definitely want to go ahead and used man to Vila's on the wall itself what would you do here very simple this is a small area. Where. We cannot go and make elaborate trees and make this color into a little. Into something that where we're not going to feel comfortable we're gonna feel very suffocated with a big stuff in here the first thing I would putting here's this cover this wall up. And I would like to use a white bird of paradise. The white bird of paradise is. A tree it's very it's similar into the bird of paradise itself is an attack upon it is no it is not it is a tree but it cannot upon. And it grows into a fanning effect. And and it's it grows right along the wall up here. And it blooms white birds. Like first like the British parent just like the bird of paradise but it the bloom was going to be wife and -- found -- it would look very nice into this area and again. That would be my accent plant along the wall. And what I would do in the bottom is create medium shrubs which injures. That's the film's different types of burns -- and create a very tropical look."

Removing a Rotted Tree
Removing a Rotted Tree

Bob talks with Ruth Foster, landscape designer and former Assistant Tree Warden for the city of Boston, about a problematic maple tree in the backyard. Foster explains the tree is a potential hazard as it is leaning and could fall on the house if there is a bad storm. The tree has a double trunk with a narrow crotch with rot in the middle, all of which make it highly unstable. The tree has also grown with a distinctive lean to better make its way towards the sunlight. The tree service company, Maltby & Co., was called in to take the tree down . A crane truck was jacked up and levelled and a police detail was called to direct traffic around the site. A man was attached to the crane's line and hoisted to the top of the tree. He then cut large branches from the tree and attached them to the crane's line to be lowered to the ground. Pieces of the branches were then fed into a wood chipper while larger sections were separated out for future use. Several smaller trees were also removed, bringing a lot of sunlight into the backyard.

Landscaping with Hedges, Trees, and Perennials
Landscaping with Hedges, Trees, and Perennials

Ruth Foster, a retired horticultural columnist from the Boston Globe, joins Bob to review the landscaping plan and plantings for the Rowley yard. Foster has selected a Euonomous hedge to screen the yard from the street. Kelly Brothers landscaping is planting the hedge plants, trees, and gardens. Foster has selected evergreens to round out the corners of the yard and shield the yard from the neighbors. Kelly Brothers plants dogwood trees and flowering magnolias that will grow to about 20 feet. Foster warns against overplanting and reminds Bob that small trees grow much quicker than large ones. She then explains the best way to plant a tree, which is wider than the root ball but with a hard bottom in the planting hole so that the tree won't sink. Foster says to keep the flair at the base of the tree above the soil line. Closer to the deck, Foster has created a flowering border that will enclose the vista and bloom throughout the season.
