" Now underneath all those roof shingles we have a brand new roof structure basically. The old hundred year old roof been back there but you see on this new timber. That is strengthening it so that we can create a cathedral ceiling and a space that's about 24. By 28 that's quite a big span. And we've made some other changes like that the partition wall that was here is now. Cut into so that we've got a nice recess for our big screen TV and we've got dormer that are going on this side but. Let's interrupt. Brendon -- over here Driscoll electric are you doing a book -- we. Let's talk a little bit about the wiring that you're doing in here is essentially this is new work -- and the architect to respect. Basically where everything goes well your clothing lines on here right now that you. That's correct. I'm pulling in some circuits for some convenience receptacles insulating. Yes in -- window in the ceilings of the little dormer that we built. We'll have recessed light and you've already gone around the room and box that I seek to track. Basically leave the room mountain now at this point cables and to all the different locations all right so where does this and -- through this document without sealing -- behind the strapping that's right OK now. What kind of cable is this that you're using this is non metallic sheets cable. There -- and what size is -- fourteen to fourteen to and that refers to the strength of the copper wire that's in Iraq. Yes that's right that now most people call this Romex. And they can't think of it -- the generic name but it's actually the brand name for a type of wiring that was invented and developed by general cable in Rome New York. Did you know that that's right interest -- trivia or 1920 itself right and it's one of the things that's made it so easy to remodel old houses that you can pull this. Cable right through the old work and fish it through walls and plastering get it to new location that's right. OK now the -- I think the plan calls for a built in in this location the cabinet little store videos and like now when you put a box -- in you know you're gonna have a cabinet in front of it. And you got in the right place where action to bring that out and a quarter of an inch fought so that it's flush with the surface okay. OK I was --"

Installing Electrical Wiring in an Old Home

Bob meets Barry Driscoll, the electrician who is wiring a third-floor sub panel. The panel feeds air handlers, bedrooms, bathrooms and an entertainment area. At the time the house was built in 1892, gas, not electricity, was used for lighting. It wasn't until the 1920s that electricity was used in the house. City of Cambridge electrical inspector looks at the sub panel for adequate size and proper location.

In this segment Bob meets Eddie Fisher, the master electrician on the Brooklyn project's infrastructure team. The team of five electricians from AC/DC Electric is rewiring the building from basement to roof deck. Fisher's team is pre-wiring the building for telephones, computer and cable TV. New York City building codes often require the use of materials and techniques not often seen in residential construction. Codes enacted in the summer of 2003 in New York City require a separate power line from the main electrical box to each GFI (Ground Fault Interrupt) circuit. Also required by code in this building is the use of BX, or metal-shielded, cable. BX is a rigid, flexible metal conduit with a wire bundle, consisting of individually insulated conductors covered by a flexible spiral-wound layer of metal. BX will typically last longer than vinyl-clad cable and may prevent some inadvertent damage in the future.
