" One of the things that we need to talk at this point is. What this backyard is going to do forming enemy it's that sizeable backyard maybe 75 by thirty or 35 pretty -- and yet we know that we don't want to create a big. Grassy area where that we would that I have to -- every Saturday morning and we know that its New England climate that we have -- a lot of snow look at up the -- in the living room and so forth. So you're gonna help me figure out what to do with this backyard when the -- We like and I get a garden. If in fact -- the yard yeah. Well you've inherited some good mature material you can probably put in a generation ago didn't. It's also been forgotten probably Jennifer generation. Your cam locks it you see if -- be wonderful old action and in the corners of the of the lot we have these hemlock right. And these. This hemlock if it were taken away you would expose a great Big Five story building so went on good urban. In the good urban garden. -- You know that's a nice -- yeah these come locks up here. Give you good protection against this house but also words of its their negative incidents there overgrown and there and they are very heavy so they need to be. They need to be really thinned out yeah it what about things like these rhododendron you know I've we've been working here now for several months and they were in bloom and they're not at all my favorite color these are quite what these are white and these rhododendron actually you can you can actually lower and tighten up rhododendron spike. Removing their new growth and get them a little bit tighter in the this rhododendron here. Some of it has died back that's a winner right. This could be cut down it happens to not be your color it's a half -- yeah. And so this this one probably would be best to either totally and completely were load that it like that. The -- dogwood. And in -- it's really just getting to be wonderful and -- and of course this rhododendron. Past ago so that the -- why are bad color yet could be fine with the -- certain competition. But you can't really move it because of its proximity to the dark -- via the root ball yeah soul so really it really diskettes taken out another crew says that gets older. Has this wonderful. Peeling or exfoliate in part guys in that beautiful and it needs a little bit of pruning you've got this one -- which is not normal to throw this out here that one -- that goes away. This. This is a really a prize -- unlike the flowering dogwood which we're used to this blooms. On its leaves rather than before its -- and it's not susceptible. To what's killing the regular flowering speaking of killing. We had all our our red cedar shingles some of them are treated with fire return we have them all. Piled up here. Our friend Austin Nicholas started dropping leaves like well had you concede that one of the reasons that it was here -- it's a very aromatic. Shingle yeah neither. The vapor from being under the cover more rain and washing down probably affected it now. Having moved at a short time ago didn't look what's happening you're getting a whole new re growth. I'll believe that it dropped off before us now even. Though the orientation the living room is southerly and we're looking kind of directly here we do get views of the neighboring house -- so that one of my concerns -- You know how -- we create some privacy here without stealing all their life."

" Well I think what we want to do it's against the neighbors I believe this is -- kitchen area privacy so we'll give them a filtered view. Into your garden and it'll be like giving them -- good sign of offense because they are immaterial will follow the sun and now get the fullest part of the material. On but we do want to extend you would you ban this -- and the Naples on for -- wrong."

" The trees -- the hemlock that we're talking about in the ones on the side are real problems and I noticed you've brought us an -- is today. Charlie coming to here and is ready has mounted the tree and ready to great talking about how to. I think I was climb up there and -- him thoughts Charlie let me interrupt here for a minute well I thought it -- you. You've got trees here there probably pretty old right while you've got four hemlock trees here that a ball. Fifty years old and I really don't think there's been any type of tree worked on in them but that period of time now and we. Hacked at them a little bit when we are staging up here and rebuilding the roof and stuff but obviously we haven't done things right how do you go about removing some of this growth that's kind of coming right on top of the house well what I am doing now is -- removing any dead limbs that I find in the tree -- throwing them back. So wait a healthy lamb so you'd be putting -- cut where I'm putting a cut."

" Right that's what we call the the koala opponent of the opera. Also lamps and -- hear it assures us that limits on here all the propositions. And which is called the collar of them. -- didn't. Okay and that Paula. You get almost see it. In and what that tree does is that it will feel well we're at that point and you cut it up slash international right and this particular. France I would cut at an angle because that's where the caller wants to -- What we're going to do what gonna chip back all of these branches to allow more the F circulation around the house to eliminate the branches from touching the buildings. Also at this one for example show me how it will where you would tip something like that we're gonna do with this morning and isn't every branch is going to be a little different as to what we could take out of the -- Because of the fact that what and how many wimps that it has growing on it okay so this particular branch I can flip Barack. Into an area like yes."

" And you can see that raises right back in and gives us really put Clarence okay. That that the key is kind of gauging how much how big branch is gonna lift up the key is the party can you take this retro the key is that how healthy the branches that ship clipping back at how much growth that has on the door properly and then. The key is taking a certain amount of weight on -- see how it's going to bounce back yet and from the homeowners perspective though the key is not to catch a lot of this stuff. In your gutters and on your animals -- absolutely and also in the winter it's it's great to have all -- the screening that -- get from the treat their privacy from from the neighboring house and to see the birds and the snow and the -- But you don't want to have these branches rubbing up against you know no you don't."

Removing a Rotted Tree
Removing a Rotted Tree

Bob talks with Ruth Foster, landscape designer and former Assistant Tree Warden for the city of Boston, about a problematic maple tree in the backyard. Foster explains the tree is a potential hazard as it is leaning and could fall on the house if there is a bad storm. The tree has a double trunk with a narrow crotch with rot in the middle, all of which make it highly unstable. The tree has also grown with a distinctive lean to better make its way towards the sunlight. The tree service company, Maltby & Co., was called in to take the tree down . A crane truck was jacked up and levelled and a police detail was called to direct traffic around the site. A man was attached to the crane's line and hoisted to the top of the tree. He then cut large branches from the tree and attached them to the crane's line to be lowered to the ground. Pieces of the branches were then fed into a wood chipper while larger sections were separated out for future use. Several smaller trees were also removed, bringing a lot of sunlight into the backyard.

Landscaping with Hedges, Trees, and Perennials
Landscaping with Hedges, Trees, and Perennials

Ruth Foster, a retired horticultural columnist from the Boston Globe, joins Bob to review the landscaping plan and plantings for the Rowley yard. Foster has selected a Euonomous hedge to screen the yard from the street. Kelly Brothers landscaping is planting the hedge plants, trees, and gardens. Foster has selected evergreens to round out the corners of the yard and shield the yard from the neighbors. Kelly Brothers plants dogwood trees and flowering magnolias that will grow to about 20 feet. Foster warns against overplanting and reminds Bob that small trees grow much quicker than large ones. She then explains the best way to plant a tree, which is wider than the root ball but with a hard bottom in the planting hole so that the tree won't sink. Foster says to keep the flair at the base of the tree above the soil line. Closer to the deck, Foster has created a flowering border that will enclose the vista and bloom throughout the season.
