" We're going to be looking at the Isaac bell house our host John mesic preservation are -- good morning how are you down time. Now you can't really tell much because of the house condition right now would you have a photograph that it does give us an idea. What this house looked like just a year ago in terms of the masses in the shade can you describe that for surely unfortunately you're seeing at a very ugly stage but. This is -- it was two years ago and you'll notice it sits on the corner of the Bellevue and Perry street and the design is very much made to fit. This nice flat lawn. And it ends with -- the or rather its bracket advanced right sees -- energy of the facade is absorbed by this projecting sleeping porch here in the second floor or this bedroom -- down here on the now terrorism let's talk about the architectural restoration -- I was surprised to see all this felt paper attached to the -- in the side of the house. What's the story we've taken all the shingles off the house. Except on the north side where original shingles from 1883 have survived and -- for another century because it -- north that doesn't take. The beating from the sun but on the side we're looking at now there were three generations of shingles and so. And or to protect the the work while we have the shingles off we put the felt the elderly couple temporary that's temporary it will come off all right now this is the garden facade is the entry to the house along with it the war on the side and and a roof sticks out to support -- to take a closer look. You've got to admit this is pretty odd and unusual detailing over here. Well it inaudible town here and so perhaps it's appropriate that we have sea monsters and it is supporting the front. Porch roof but it's actually Chinese thing I presume they were we speculate that the columns were painted red paint analysis is being done just now and they found gold leaf around the heads the rather also -- the -- So there really splendid things greeting you with the front door here. It's a shingle style house but. It's all breakdown Elvis red brick was a story. I believe they wanted to create an -- base to the house as well as a more shadowed enclosure for the port in the system think Stanford white and and and a number of the house across the street by him has the stone Baghdad. Now there's this one of the columns that your yes -- going to be stripped of its paint and never seen something like this typically it's. Turn to resemble bamboo exactly that we presume another oriental feature that's been added to the house yeah so the rings and then. Just that this light well and have a swelling on its beauty beautiful do. Beautiful work of the house a solid beautiful work guys feel safe. Paneling at what we're here -- I'm inside."
" Is a pretty vast front hall is a very welcoming space the largest one in the house. And now the paneling that we looking -- over here in the carving this doesn't look like it's 1890s with what -- so we speculate that the bells got this perhaps on their honeymoon in France it's a threat from bed half. And framed and -- bed in a peasant cottage probably wonderful car birds and flowers throughout this. -- so they -- enough of this and teak -- to create this whole section -- of the fireplace -- here we have -- all over the -- how -- is lined with us now what's behind these -- well once -- in the restoration you'll see that -- right polished hidden behind there which reflected the -- of course especially at night you know all come -- indeed and the fireplace must be six or seven feet across all of -- all of -- with these beautiful Dutch tiles. -- had -- our minister to the Netherlands after he built a house perhaps he got the tiles at that time indeed so he continues the antique paneling but it's interrupted by these wonderful windows -- is that middle class yes that's for -- glass which you must realize call the afternoon sunlight and -- It came in it would make the rainbow expect the space will be great again is I mean the rest of the room is all contemporary paneling even the ceiling right. The ceiling of squatters song quite know it's very difficult come by today fortunately survived in good condition here. Would this have been a ceiling -- some sort well I think it's ornamentation is half of the bed warmer pan. Brass pan and keep it should be polished to high policies that reflect again that night time line. Other windows on the staircase -- no we have no evidence of -- that we would like to think with the -- but there's no evidence for that either the colors really work very well with the colors that will be restored -- the -- the colors are very good but in the golden though is what's really unifying throughout this -- yesterday -- look at the size of these doors -- covering a sixteen foot opening. This is the type of paneling that we're trying to recreate. Where did post basically a recess panel pregnant yes and you can see that the panels have been staggered to make it geometrically more interesting when you look at the door sure and again. Quartersawn oak you know what about the with the system sliding -- exposed was it meant to be exposed my guess is -- unique thing you can imagine again the architects were having a bit of fun they seem to be perhaps. Door wheels like and so on New England bonds okay have they all finished with an ornamental. Oriental fashions yet indeed even down here those brass processor chrysanthemum we have -- Japanese received throughout the house -- And then the paneling continues and what's this is the dining room through here yes that's the guy who -- another set of sliding doors. This one is working perfectly. Course they'll be some restoration to the finish but you're very lucky that nobody painted illustrator attack. Wow so is this all mahogany in here this is mahogany Honduran mahogany it needs to be cleaned. But it will be red brown a marvelous shade of red brown and noticed the brass means that has been on an out of the hinges and so we're all here we have one of the bed warmer -- they were -- all over the room here. And you can see the ghost up here -- the door -- square one and was positioned and there around the room what they did is they took half of that warmer and mounted in a brass plate -- beautiful -- again high -- picking up the nighttime light when your dinner now what have you here. This is a rendering that we have reduced to show how this room dining room with book when all the elements are put back into it. So these are the of the bed warmer throughout I didn't. And thereon -- tan walls as well as the ceilings and noticed the dining room chairs they still survive. They were in the attic about how. So you're lucky to have some of the original furnishings from the room yes and they will be restored they need a great deal of care they need a fair amount of frustration but it's an interesting design -- apparently designed by the architect because the same chairs are found it can -- joining house we're. Stanford white to the dining room in the same cares. Now you said a minute ago that everything was covered in. In straw in well regret and a war over in pain if you will sort of raffia color it would have been sort of pale gold and -- shiny and night would have picked up a life so it's funny that a little bit survives reading between the casings of the windows which are so you know heavy in the mahogany and when this was new the red of the mahogany with a -- of Iraq a one point counterpoint -- absolutely. And then what we've got over here's more of the same sorts of recessed panels. Any varies the sizes of the recess panels -- goes BI has always entertained and -- it and can even white interior this period."
