" There in the master bath. -- who Escobar has got a head start with some of the beautiful material. And is working on the shower but I wanted to get -- close look at this this tumbled marble. That is right now it's kind of in the -- agent looks like ancient stone but when -- see you later on. Who look like that of course that he's already got in place here. And you can see it's gonna be distant. A beautiful contrast between this terracotta desk right here that's you know what you see is which yet and then this stone. But we're in the shower you know a key thing when -- building showers to make sure that it's not going to leak. And I want you to take a look at it flashback it was shot about a month ago really where we went through all the different steps waterproofing this area watch. And joining us now is frank lateral our plumbing contractor and we're talking the shower stall in my bathroom here. Frank why do you have to have a copper pan in a shower -- actually what we -- safe there what it does is collect any of the water that -- through the Iowa. Through whatever room material is used to finish the shower up especially you have some sort of grout failure exact and you start to get water seeping in between the ceramic -- we're gonna have very high quality. American made ceramic tile in here. But. Still you never know that the grout won't fail at some point exactly so you were gonna on the drain -- cadre is that. Well this is a shower strainer and it's adjustable so that we can adjust the height for the the poor which is the US cement pouring into these opinions. That. There's going to be the base of the you're I was put it right it'll be a mud job on what -- saying is. Into that piece you bring -- the second piece which is the finished and that has over an inch of adjustment so that you can have that much mud thrown in there exactly. OK so do you have to solder this now guess I well I just flux that a -- so I'm going to give it a little heat. And number refused to show -- straight it to the spin."

" We've got two different thickness of the metal here Bob and what's the important is that we. Make sure that we'll get the correct temperature which is 450 to 500 degrees. In both metal and that we. Your belt the daughter. At the same time we reached that temperature itself. It's kind of base. What can go. Situation before. Using the floors. Floor. Without any fell one of when they're both hot enough. When this artifact blowing and and it sticks to both pieces of metal that we know we're going. That it doesn't deny afterwards it's still -- stud -- the floor right now. Feet. That it could move the daughter along the it's being. Here. Is that fairly broad."

" That the -- to do this with a soldering I. We've been built with the floors. They would stuttering sciences that you've got to continually. You taught science. And and that is that sometimes you have to stop and wait for the giants -- up we'll with a torch and -- say I've got a continuous flow here. I'm doing. We'll. Continue. Solder along the -- terrific. Now aren't you worried about burning the PVC pipe it."

" I've know Bob because this is temporary that's what we call whatsoever and it's only for lineup the picture that weren't falling in the proper location we remove this in -- permanent. -- and later on OK."

" Now in addition to all this preparation the walls of the shower stall. Are going to be tiled and actually in a marble product and because -- is somewhat ports to a take extra precautions so Denny were -- is helping us do it. Put on -- moisture barrier. Which is the same material that he uses a nice since. Water shield on the roof. This of course is pretty forgiving stuff so that we can. Trim and as we need to. Right onto the studs. Over the insulation -- we are of course on an outside wall here. -- put a little bit of cut on this corner over here. Together. This is number three. All right now we're installing the seventh dishes board. Right over the felt paper and the moisture barrier we're using a double threaded screw made out of the corrosion resistant metal. And we're taking all of these precautions as I said because you know you don't want to have to repair. A shower stall Judith any kind of water damage for many many years to come if you can avoid it."

Installing a Shower Fixture
Installing a Shower Fixture

Bob Vila meets with Carlos Leuchtmann from Blue Ridge Plumbing, who shows Bob the shower pan and layout of the new fixtures. Leuchtmann explains that the drain is off center due to structural supports in the floor that cannot be moved. Leuchtmann also points out the anti-scald restrictor and the dual-flow Moen shower fixture, which allows for either an overhead rain-type shower or a body spa with four wall sprayers. Leuchtmann shows Bob a tool for plumbers and electricians called the stud popper. The device makes a perfect hole in steel framing for running pipes or electrical wire. Once punched, the stud is fitted with a pipe tight that provides a feed for the pipes or wires and keeps them from touching the metal studs. Carlos also explains how sanding the pipe and adding flux creates a bonding surface for the solder to adhere to when sweating pipe.

Tankless hot water heaters provide on-demand hot water without the need to continually store and heat water 24 hours a day. Aaron Siegel from Eemax joins Steve Easley at the EnergyWise House to explain how the company s products supply hot water for applications ranging from hand washing to drench showers, with a sophisticated thermostatic control to ensure precise outlet temperature. Whole-house units are activated by water flow and demand to draw only the energy required to meet hot water demand.

Low-Flow Showerheads and Faucets
Low-Flow Showerheads and Faucets

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. Showers account for more than one-fifth of the water Americans use every day. We can conserve more of this precious resource with a low-flow showerhead. If you re not convinced you need to cut your water flow, put a 2-quart pan under your showerhead and turn it on. If it takes less than 12 seconds to fill the pan, you could conserve. Low-flow showerheads limit flow to 2 and a half gallons per minute or less and cost between $8 and $50. Contrary to popular belief, they do not reduce the water pressure of your shower. Some mix the water with air, others pulse and some are elevated to provide a rain shower effect. For between $70 and $250, you can buy one that will even filter chlorine and other chemicals from your water for a truly clean shower that won t dry out your skin. Take a look at the end of your faucet: Most are threaded to receive an aerator. If your existing aerator has a number greater than 2.75 GPM written on it or there isn t one at all, it s an easy upgrade to install. Remove the old one by turning it to the left. If it s stuck, gently use vice grips or tongue-and-groove pliers. Add a piece of Teflon tape over the faucet threads before screwing on the new one to form a tight seal. Faucet aerators only cost $5 to $10 and will pay for themselves in water savings in only a few months. Installing faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads in your home is one of the best ways to reduce your environmental footprint, and it can save you 50 percent of your water and hot water costs to boot.
