Entryway and Dining Room Tour

Bob tours the front vestibule, highlighting the beautiful stencil work done by Kim Sweet. The stencil work replaced moldings in many homes of this nineteenth century era. The stencil work is not just on the wall but extends to the ceiling. This small vestibule will take the artist four days to complete using oil based paint. Greg Rochlin meets with Bob to discuss a few architectural pieces that borrow modern technology, combine stock pieces to antiques to create an authentic paneled wall and inlayed flooring. Bob meets with Susanne Csongor and Christine Lane of CLC Interiors to discuss some of the choices made in decorating the dining room and front hall. They used dense busy patterned wallpaper in the small dining room to give it an intimate feel. Combining it with red cotton chintz drapes with goblet pleats to accent the berries in the wallpaper. A Russian rug on the floor in the hallway was the color palette inspiration for this room as well as a blue Greek turnkey pattern for the runner up the stairs.

" The vestibule which of course didn't have much architectural interest benefits now from a lot of our architect's design but I think one of the key. Elements that have come into play here is this stenciling in the around the ceiling kind of creating a cornice like effect. Can -- our artist in residence took care of this. Nineteenth century rooms often had decorative detailing that was actually painted in stencils. And here in our little vestibule Kim sweet has designed to this. Motif this will actually be on the vertical on the wall and this will be up on the ceiling on the horizontal she's actually getting started camp I wanna Dracula bit well I can't interrupt you -- cannot go with a brush work and a but the first step here was to put up all the glue masking tape right right and that must have taken the better part of a day yeah I just finished apple and Dell announcement -- caller okay and the color for of these is the part that will resemble a cornice is a deep red. What kind of paint is it is all well it's okay. And then at the top section. The base -- there is a beautiful teal green has yet. How I'm going to take to do -- about four days. And it will -- the detailing also be stents colors that had --"

" I'm just canceled -- there's going to be a slight detail around the edges just brilliant black line to bring out the -- and as the gold gold leaf for is that. No we're not amused gold leaf we're gonna use gold paint sound good in the can't wait to see it finished."

" Let's say hello to Greg rochlin the architect is going to lower fire you -- now much of what you designed. Relies on modern materials right yes this medium density overlay board appeared next to. It custom molding right and this is just to stop this would come along the yard right and then on the floor floors of stock in life. Against that the existing flooring -- and yet this little touches like this to bring the flavor of the 1890s back into the top step."

" Well as the retailing that makes a huge difference in a Victorian house. This is all taken us ten months from the time we started demolition to it to this point and we're at the point now that we can celebrate interior design. Witnesses Christine Blaine and Suzanne charter from CLC interior I don't. -- I'll hit you let's talk a little bit about what you've done is you've helped us choose. Colors and wallpaper and a furniture placement of carpet patterns and stuff in here in the dining room you you you know you talked us into a very busy wallpaper. "

" Right and we think it looks spectacular. About it. It's a very dense patterned imports and a small one because occasion with every intimate feelings and and the broken up with it off white collar which brings -- background of the wallpaper and beautiful green below so it's not too busy. And then they've used bad traits pick up the red berries yell -- at one point there was if you had a big room."

" You wouldn't want to use a paper like -- overwhelming it is it is yeah that's that and it's expensive so we used to small amount in this small room like this tell me about draperies Robert."

" Okay this is -- well price cotton tents and what -- done is that traversing -- which means we've covered the hole in the fabric as well as the finial. And that's fabric -- go all the way across the window which is about ten yard and we featured some beautiful goblet states named after a goblet -- I was very nice."

" That's right yeah what I loved about that was -- fifteen dollars BR right right and then in this corner we have the only architectural feature that was in the house but it was missing its upper doors so we've recreated -- based on kind of the paneling design we had here and expected some old blue and white -- that I think. Really lives everything great time let's talk about the hall. The rug in the hall is one that we picked up on a trip it's actually Russian. And you've used it as your -- inspiration here right yes that's a lot of different resonate carpet. And we use it -- more small amounts and again it's it's a pattern that."

" Unifies the entire space it relates to the dining room and everywhere and stuff that's right and also you can see the blue in the rug and the -- king which is repeated in the border in the runner."

" And it and I think and these these are the important things to it to unify the interior. They're kind of have everything blend -- relate to that's right great job thank you don't Christine thanks last time fans class act and the one left that's that I love on the staircase is the and I -- does this nineteenth century textured paper that we used along the wall here."

Durable Front Entry Columns for Colonial Home
Durable Front Entry Columns for Colonial Home

At the modern Colonial's front entry, Bob takes a look at the columns that support the overhang at the front entry. An alternative to wooden columns, these columns, supplied by Chadsworth's Columns, are made of a proprietary material called PolyStone, a mix of reinforced polyester resin, fiberglass and marble dust. Strong and long lasting, the columns are expected to perform well in the often-harsh New England climate.

Tour of the Port Royal Parlor at Winterthur
Tour of the Port Royal Parlor at Winterthur

Bob returns to Winterthur, industrialist Henry Francis du Pont's country estate, which is now a museum, in Delaware's Brandywine Valley. The museum's Port Royal Parlor display was originally part of a country home in Philadelphia slated for demolition in the 1920's. A collector of American antiques and architecture, du Pont bought the entire home and moved it to Winterthur. Pauline Eversmann, Winterthur's program director, joins Bob for a tour and recounts the parlor's history. The entryway opens onto the gardens, and in Colonial times, the doors would remain open to provide a view of the garden before guests proceeded to the parlor. As an area of the home intended for formal entertaining, du Pont wanted this room to be functional, so he expanded the parlor from its original size. Among the period antiques on display is an antique high chest that du Pont purchased for $44,000 in 1929, setting a long-standing price record for early American furniture.

Floorplans and Layout of the Container House

Back on site, Bob joins Ray Price for a look at the ISBU's on their foundations. The total footprint of the house is 58 feet from front to back, or 1,800 square feet in total, with 2 ISBU's on each side. Between them, 7 3/4 inch-wide steel floor joists will run 16 inches on center and be welded on each end to the ISBU's, creating a total steel structure that will then get a plywood subfloor. Price shows Bob the floorplans for this Highland model. It has a front entry that leads to a living room, dining room, and kitchen combination that functions like a great room and family space. A central hallway leads to the back of the house and passes between two bedrooms on the right with a bath between them and two bedrooms on the left, including a master bedroom with its own bath, walk-in closet, and utility room. The single-car garage is built of cement block. The exterior will be finished in stucco like a traditional Florida home, and will match its identical, but smaller, prototype down the block.

Review of Colonial-Style Architecture and Exurban Living
Review of Colonial-Style Architecture and Exurban Living

Setting the stage for his 21st century Colonial project, Bob discusses the current trend toward exurban living and the renewed popularity of the Center Entry Colonial. The original Colonial-style homes where built by the colonists before the American Revolution. They regained favor in the 1870s at the time of the Centennial and again in the 1930s as people realized the importance of preserving the country's antique homes, and yet again during the Bicentennial. Salient characteristics include a pitched roof, central chimney, evenly placed windows right under the roofline, shutters, and, of course, a center entry.
