Installing Insulspan Structural Insulated Panels

Bob and Ryley check out the Insulspan panels with Frank Baker from Insulspan. The Styrofoam panels save steps in construction since they include structural stability, insulation, sidewall, and interior drywall. Frank explains that his company takes the architectural plans and mathematically constructs the layout and structural engineering for the panel system. Because of the way the panels are constructed, there is no need for studs and the large panel sections create a uniform surface of up to eight feet wide by twenty-four feet long. Bob points out some thicker eight-inch panels that will be used in the ceiling and which will receive a two by eight for structural support. The panels are filled with a R34 polyurethane foam with oriented strand board (OSB) on one side and drywall on the other. The four inch thick sidewall panels are drilled and screwed to the timber framework. Frank explains that his company uses OSB instead of plywood because OSB can be made in much larger sheets. The panels are connected with a plywood spline and foam insert. After a few hours of work the house is ready for windows and a roof.

" What we've got here these insults band panels the and so spent company makes them in about four different locations in the country. But they include the installation the outside sheathing the inside well let's let's get together with frank baker from the company and Bob Ryley good morning gentlemen aren't our act act. And let's talk a little bit about the system because this is not only. A way of saving a lot of steps in construction right but our assurance since -- don't crack but it's also an exercise in mathematics. Malvinas. Mathematics firm firm computer evidently. Exactly it's -- which you guys do you take. The architects. Plan in this case it's a plan that shows you the exact location of every post and beam and rafters in this structure. And you mathematically. Figure out what the layout is for your panel system right."

" I would look for they optimal way out here to minimize waste and also to provide these structural engineering. Required in the structure and in this case with post and beam front make those nails play well on that aren't right."

" And so here where we're looking at a system where you really don't have a series of two by four studs on sixteen inch centers anymore you've got this the structural strength or an addition to the posts and beams but. Right into this that these components."

" Right we're doing with large panels sections here up to me he fired back point for -- twenties and they're thick these are really -- these for the roof. These roof panels here we Polly's anomaly against panel because the core. -- And it's it's the sidewalk panels are the ones you got down here there. A different thickness right. Right -- sidewalls here are four inch thick panels which is very typical for a -- and often. Now what do they what is driving these these screws in your listeners -- actually hold the panel to attend the framework."

" Right through the use in these are hardened screws. And they just driving them right -- already snap lines where outposts so when they lifted up they'll drive these screws right into our. Okay. Eyes -- reason why you as oriented strand board instead of plywood. "

" That's bottle it's quote limited to four by eight foot side. And -- becoming more more expensive Leslie and air quality trees there -- yet nor its brand horses and went there and sizes. You can make the sheets pretty date correct. That's part of -- the speed of the system confident and also the uniformity of the details all want peace -- eruptions in the system. Other senator joint here can be. Right around this particular window opening. At that point we use it plywood spline. To actually hear one panel to be doing there."

" There ago. Yeah for more -- look at it looks pretty beautiful right. That is one of our rectangular. Window openings in the section of the barn that will be our parks boards brightness -- theory there when new installation matter of hours here what's. -- the plywood. Violence and actually want it -- through one panel to the next witness comforted. Act as one you -- them panels the entirely to build IC. And also helped to seal that joint. Although we will also. Be inserting phone in the event going farming group and."

" And now we're ready just actually start putting. The federal building reminisce about -- travel quite put on the top enumerate them repaired today."
