Removing the Porch Columns

Bob and Cortney Lofton remove the front porch columns so they can be replicated. The matching cloumns will be used on the home's new back porch. Cortney also notices evidence of decay along the lower base of the columns. They install several temporary braces around the porch to support the weight of the roof once the columns are removed.

" Started today with -- Courtney -- and our general contractor and we're taking that columns off the front porch. Let me get -- well the homeowner -- architect has designed -- porch just like at the rear of the house and we want to duplicate these columns identically. So the way to do that is taken to a -- that they can take precise measurements and then make. Replicas exactly yet another concern of mine is that the the bases look pretty pretty torn and worn out and I figured -- out. We can replace them and this is structural uses these two columns are holding up this little heavy porch roofs over our car in a short -- well we'll start with the put this support on the front. In this little. Hopefully prevent it from falling forward OK and we've yet TJ Serrano when you're carpenter here who's going to. -- it up for -- TJ. There. And the bird's mouth not to this -- of the two by six make sure that. This will be able to move forward now are we ready -- jacking the whole thing up from the sheriff. You precut some salvaged lumber yep we we're gonna put in this letter -- And then next we'll take in that. Two by four actually this was one of the original pieces okay house and you were -- lift that up for a -- sure this is a great little tool when you're doing this kind of work. Who constantly with the other way Iraq area where it came -- Okay little more -- little bit more. She lifting we have low load columns. OK -- to pressure OK so this is just temporary temporary while we put into supports on either side of this right. Check that employs the top and at the bottom Gallo uses sixth. And being able to toe -- at end. Of the two sides that we want. Will strip. -- if we need to."

" Subject a little bit more. In the back."

Lou Lou that things coming apart. Its -- announcement. And actually a little bit of evidence of insect damage here. And business columnist -- baseless and fix the base was just sitting there. And oh yeah look at this -- the bugs and there's a lot one in -- term right now looks like Margaret Beckett. This well we'll have to dispose of it carefully now the idea could knock the softest those. Is the idea of making a and -- want to damage any yeah. -- Of this came from a catalog but obviously -- made the it's piece of think it's dovetailed together -- And it's in great shape there's no damage to it at all and even debate this base has a little bit of damage was just the blocks that are pretty yet infested --"

Building a Covered Porch

Bob lends a hand to contractor Bob Ryley as he begins construction of the porch at the project on Martha's Vineyard. Ryley starts out by explaining the use of concrete forms to Bob. He then connects pressure treated limber to the side of the house with six-inch lag bolts to secure the joists. After the joists are in place Bob and Ryley start the deck with one by four vertical grade fir. Which is a traditional material used on covered porches. After the decking is installed Ryley and Bob Start on the columns salvaged from the other side of the Victorian.

Hurricane Protection for Porches, Windows, and Doors
Hurricane Protection for Porches, Windows, and Doors

Ted Gower from Armor Screen is installing the hurricane-protection fabric that will make the lanai a hurricane shelter in case of a storm. There are bolts and clips at the top with clips along the side. The sides are locked down along the sides and bottom to resist the enormous wind pressure during a storm. This geosynthetic fabric serves in stead of plywood or other storm protection coverings. The fabric reduces 100 mile per hour (mph) winds to 3 mph and reduces it to 0 mph if rain sheets on the fabric, causing a complete wind barrier. This fabric stands up to winds and wind-borne debris, making the enclosed lanai a hurricane-safe shelter by code and by design. Armor Screen can be used on any door, window, or porch openings to protect homes from damaging winds and flying debris.
