" This material as exotic as an edited wears its Indians."

" It's Indian slate yes and it's it's pretty inconsistent. As well as in color."

" And in and shaped Ellen that the -- of this -- it's absolutely ground. One of our challenges here is that there's a lot of green and blue tiles and and you know one would spend many hours."

" can't selecting."

" And I do believe our homeowner architect spent quite a few cars going to avoid it grabbed it to the wholesaler to make all the right ones we've certainly -- at the color match. Let's come -- appeared take a look at the work they're doing on the steps because this is where it becomes the most elaborate. Yeah I have to do any cutting here we had you know the size of this as well put it. Each one of these tiles come from the quarry -- twelve inch square yeah and there they are quite inconsistent in size but for STU. Have consistency. With full size tiles would have to cut each one of them down. -- five eighths of an -- not a big problem with today's so waters caused and diamond blades and -- that remembrances that now what kind of mortar and using it. They use an offensive it's it's a cement based product. And near the consistency that is like -- thank -- letter he. -- trowel it on to the substrate they're not Straus and what's the sides of that not at all is an important thing but it creates that your reporter. I think it's a three days yet here that's an important that that did not really determines how much of this -- supplies -- and -- rigid soccer ridges are -- as well with the inconsistency on the underside of the tile we want to letter each one of those tiles. And then they're they're pressed in place and we uses rubber spacers. These things right here on these have really become a critical part of the equation and laying tile bathroom stuff for a -- bath. Now with a risers also -- and stone yes there risers from this stone. To stone we'll be used in and -- which I think we have -- right into your riot. Now. Is that enough mortar on the back of one of these risers. These butter in it now it yes we wanted to get all four points and maybe 33 points in the center tile OK. So you don't do with a notched trowel you do -- regular appointing Ralph. And you loaded up and about a half dozen plays and wolf Carlos has started earlier was using the notched trowel on the substrate. It indicates. But the objective is of course to get. -- all over the back of the sun -- of attract. Are you going to treat the edge here."

" Just throughout. Yes into the grout and once that's in place and drive and seal the water's there."

" Well there's a lot of tile -- here to get the rest of his deck -- and the perimeter around the -- with --"

" 24 hours have a -- didn't. All of the mortar has set so that the next step could be accomplished which is basically grouting the tile and the risers and it. These have now also been set they have been grout it yet. But they took the precaution of putting spacers in as well as using duct tape to keep all these writers right where they want them right with the correct reveal. Quarter inch otherwise they could have sagged down. So at this point we're getting very far along with the construction of this part of the pool. We have the perimeter all laid down notice they've -- color matched and chosen very carefully but we still have to put the risers all the way across. The three sides of the pool. Lot of work."

Building a Covered Porch
Building a Covered Porch

Bob lends a hand to contractor Bob Ryley as he begins construction of the porch at the project on Martha's Vineyard. Ryley starts out by explaining the use of concrete forms to Bob. He then connects pressure treated limber to the side of the house with six-inch lag bolts to secure the joists. After the joists are in place Bob and Ryley start the deck with one by four vertical grade fir. Which is a traditional material used on covered porches. After the decking is installed Ryley and Bob Start on the columns salvaged from the other side of the Victorian.

Hurricane Protection for Porches, Windows, and Doors
Hurricane Protection for Porches, Windows, and Doors

Ted Gower from Armor Screen is installing the hurricane-protection fabric that will make the lanai a hurricane shelter in case of a storm. There are bolts and clips at the top with clips along the side. The sides are locked down along the sides and bottom to resist the enormous wind pressure during a storm. This geosynthetic fabric serves in stead of plywood or other storm protection coverings. The fabric reduces 100 mile per hour (mph) winds to 3 mph and reduces it to 0 mph if rain sheets on the fabric, causing a complete wind barrier. This fabric stands up to winds and wind-borne debris, making the enclosed lanai a hurricane-safe shelter by code and by design. Armor Screen can be used on any door, window, or porch openings to protect homes from damaging winds and flying debris.

What size trowel to use for ceramic tile?

What size trowel do you recommend for 4in and 8in wall tiles, and 12, 16, and 18 in floor tiles? I also read some prefer to butter the back of each individual tile instead of applying the thinset to the floor first and then laying the tile. Any recommendations? Thanks
