" The architect's design calls for the use of these full. Two by twelve red wood pieces as a band along the perimeter of the porch and I believe they're going to be painted out but before they get -- it is just so nice to look at this -- they get out here. The rest of the field of the decking is being made out of the one and a half by three inch milled hamper and you know that's a lumber that we use often for framing back east and here it's been dipped in prefinished. And what I like about it is it's a good stable material -- not going to. Twist in cup on -- and according how is it to put -- using. The box nails right these look like at their ten. As opposed electroplated galvanized the the dipped galvanized ends up with enough texture on the shank of the nail that he grips the wood really really well. But why Cuba nailing it -- power nailing it actually like that and nail that we could fit each piece -- and we can control. The actual depth -- you know with our own nails is that right him."

" It."

" Thus when we drive it we're we're sure to get an nice tight joint. OK you get that we've pre cut these around this jog this original closet wall that we have. Interrupting the backyard deck and it and it will -- density of longer pieces. Okay this next piece there's been precut. Is it does make a better fit when you've got a situation where. There's a corner of the house there and you have to break in -- to -- you're better off making the cuts. Taking the measurements and making the not if you will so that the peace will then you have one out of tornado piece. But the whole depth of the porch there. It -- right and yet it's trying to. OK just move -- hair and we'll get a tight fitted this sample. And that look that looks good. OK now we're getting close to the end here the and part of the carpenters arithmetic is depicting the uniform but we've got into the like five pieces is to rip -- adamantly eliminate dividends the the -- apart. So that the in effect will end up. Five pieces that look more or less the same size as the rest of the deck and if we hadn't done that when we get to the but with the red would you would have had -- quantity. And that's what we're trying to avoid. Okay we're in now for the redwood trim it will use. Finished nails again hot dipped galvanized. Absolutely gripped much of what. Does that look great."

Nailing Technique
Nailing Technique

There's more to nailing than just ready-aim-swing. Face nailing is what we all learn how to do first. Drive the nail straight through one piece into the other. This is the quickest and easiest way but not really the strongest. For added strength try toe-nailing. Drive a pair of nails at opposing forty-five degree angles. This is the method carpenters use to frame a house.

Deck Nails
Deck Nails

Take extra care when nailing your deck. Instead of driving the nails completely in with a hammer. Use a nail set to finish off the job and avoid damaging the wood. Also, use 16 penny common nails as spacers and pull the boards tight to correct any natural curve they might have.

Deck Building
Deck Building

Here are some basic things to remember when building your own deck. Attach the joist hangers 16 inches apart on center to the side rails. Assemble all floor joists and side rails before nailing. Then, nail all at once, using galvanizd nails. Overhang the first floor board by half an inch using galvanized finish nails. If you have an enclosed deck or a screened porch you can use tongue and groove flooring.

Window Trim
Window Trim

Here's how to install window casings. After the window stool and apron are in place, start with the top casing and nail with brads. Glue the joints of the side casings and tack nail the miters. Pipe clamp the molding to get a tight fit (on the joints). Finish nailing the casing with brads to the premarked reveal line. Then use finish nails to secure the casing to the studs.
