" What do you think of how these guys are building this out. Well thought about it at issue we're founding what they're using it to chase wall OK and then putting all of the mechanical Lyle leaves and seeds. To hear from one bullet in the -- so this basically goes from the basement always through the -- I read the roof. And it's the conduit -- whether the space where you locate all the water beats all the wastes all the well they're venting the venting except mom's basement right here look at that and that the actually this is the dry out and movement is going to have a Brian and right next to it is they. Me vent. Bathroom fans because you've got to get at a lot of moisture in an area in electrical stuff isn't there -- right electrical when everything in this. Metal conduit. Runs the distance from armored cable yeah now don't you have to fireproof this whole thing Reagan Qaeda or leveler -- utility -- is --"

" One construction 100% fireproof and this chase which is open all the way into the basement it's gonna get it to our rating. Which means there's two layers of five -- fire code. Gypsum board here and then actually because it'll work from one side on this side. They're gonna be putting big heavy gypsum panels snapping them between the joists and recovering at the gypsum board."

" Anything that's metal storage stepped up the kind of funny looking at -- problems disease that these that. OK and then in terms of places where in the bathroom here right we get. It was over here yet and that's a given your end in your slab. And then over here I guess they intended to put a -- but I think we may think about. Converting this into a large shower room yeah. If we wanted to move locations around we could raise the floor couldn't she can't yet. And then you can put the plumbing anyplace you want what you want to and what's this this is that's for the Washington aren't there yes it would have to be stacked washer dryer. And they've put. Drain in the floor which is always good idea and I think we would be smart to add up pan Arab network. One drawback of this kind of package deal is you don't really get any closet space accounts that -- death. So you've got a lot of volume but you don't have anything already therefore it. The other options I guess -- yeah you can put lots and you can bring the ceiling down and put things about that there's all kinds of things you can -- of that. Height in the space and in terms of the fireproof construction that you can't put in wooden partitions yep that's that's finding out of that kind of literature but let's let down but you can't build him. Cabinets are armed forces cancer wouldn't. Finished kind of elements that provides storage and here you got all this all of -- the only thing that's defined is where you locate your kitchen right."

" Well yes think is a stud and for the sink. There's the gas supply for the stove and behind you well as the air handler with air conditioning system is a two and a half and man here that's the return air. And this X -- around -- over the air as the supply now that's not for heat that's just -- air conditioning technician. How do we need this. Well they have boilers in the basement and they're going to provide other navy water where -- Like there. And and that's a thermostat now you can see the wire right and thermostat an -- the baseboard radiation. We'll be controlled and each unit around the perimeter on the premise okay."

" The big challenge which is. You know how do you how you cut up the space how do you divide the space well I think not because a lot -- you don't want to build wrongs I mean you want to convert this into an apartment. Now that you really need to define spaces that I walls yet and you can do that by changing levels drop in the ceiling. Doing other things too. Create a difference thanks I'll run it be easy to put a wooden deck in here which would be a lot more comfortable underfoot. That would be great way to put it nice wood floor on minutes after -- up because concrete who have guided him now could you frame it in wood. You can as long as the wood is fired treated. Which is legal or you can build about steel. And when that. I concrete pour. Right so there are systems death plots everything on north and around him -- a lack of sawdust there's a lot of with a big black stuff that's death. I'm figuring that from the point of -- having fun with carpentry is going to be in the Bill -- in the details but from the point of view the actual construction. You know its brick and concrete it's -- steel roof yes well got a lot of challenges ahead of us thanks like ballots."

Running HVAC Ductwork in a New Colonial
Running HVAC Ductwork in a New Colonial

Bob meets with Peter Merianos and the crew from Coastal Heating and Air Conditioning who are fabricating the AC ductwork on site. With the Kenmore air handler already installed in the attic, the crew begins assembling the ductwork using five-foot lengths of pre-crimped sheet-metal ducting as the basic material. The sections snap together and are secured with sheet-metal screws and foil tape. To add a new line off the main trunk, the crew cuts a hole into the the trunk with a special tool. A starting collar from which the new line will extend is then inserted into the hole. The ductwork is insulated using vinyl wrap, which is a one and a half-inch vinyl-coated fiberglass blanket.

Hydro-Air Heat, Partially Solar-fed Indirect Domestic Hot Water, and In-Floor Radiant
Hydro-Air Heat, Partially Solar-fed Indirect Domestic Hot Water, and In-Floor Radiant

Bob talks with Tim Cutler from TJ's Plumbing and Heating about the Viessmann boiler. The boiler is heating the domestic hot water, the radiant floor heating, and the hydro-air heating system. The hydro-air system has an air handler with a hot water coil. Warm air is dispersed throughout the building using this hydro-air system, which heats the existing, older portion of the house. Showers and hot water will be fed by a 79 gallon indirect, dual-coil, domestic hot-water tank. The bottom coil is fed by the solar heating system, which has 30 Viessmann evacuated tubes on the roof. The tubes have alcohol within them which has a low boiling point. When the alcohol in the tubes boils, it transfers the BTUs to a bulb, which transfers the heat to the lower coil for domestic hot water. A concrete cutter came in to cut an opening in the basement between the old portion of the home and the new addition. Bob talks with Bill Sloan from Viega North America about the radiant slab heating in the new addition. The radiant heating system uses PEX tubing. Viega manufactures the manifolds for this tubing and the copper tubing used to transfer hot water to the PEX tubing. ProPress joints that do not require any soldering are used for this sytem.

HVAC System for the Home Addition
HVAC System for the Home Addition

Bob meets with Mark, a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning mechanic. Bob and Mark have an in-depth discussion on why a homeowner had to add an air-conditioning unit to an existing air-conditioning unit. The new space added onto the residence was too large for the old unit to cool, so a new 1-1/2 ton unit had to be added. They also describe how the particular unit cools the home and the major components of the unit.

You can try to insulate any exposed duct from on top of the furnace and the coil box. Most air handlers are insulated within their own chasis. All you really need is approx. 1"- 1 1/2" of glass insulation.

Insulate air handler?

My house has 2 heat pumps. One air handler is in the attic, one in the crawl space. My question is: should air handlers (sheet metal) be insulated, and if so, what's the right way to do it?
