" Well we're in Tucson Arizona visiting -- Kevin Kelly who's the president of the -- development and last week we visited with you we saw some of the sips houses and now we're gonna look at it different technology that involves struck. That's right Bob this this is actually a byproduct of wheat strong right here in southern Arizona. And instead of ending up in a landfill or having to burn the excess waste product of that of that crop. We converted into a building material that's amazing so we're going to be looking at closely at how our house is built out of straw and we'll also have houses here that are being built out of Adobe. And in recycle styrofoam and cement so it's an exciting few minutes but let's take a closer look at the struck out of it okay. Well the masses of the house are pretty conventional going to get close up it's a special. Special Vila. Yeah this is actually baba a post and beam structure with the straw -- being the and -- the wall and the posts are six by six and you got little ends up there don't we certainly do that is the very sturdy building. Now is that necessary with straw -- constructed they ought to be done like this there's two ways to build straw one of them is you actually use the the straw walls of bearing wall the second which is little more conservative which we chose to go with the post and -- and I feel. But you couldn't profit profit -- that you could act its like this tell me a little bit about the are there any inherent problems with that insects that are. But you know rodents reality actually that's a misnomer people -- straw and hay and in fact what this is this is that -- cellulose -- you're not going to attract a lot of bugs at all. And out of course when the Stucco is over it you're you're not gonna house. Any easier pinch but its ability here that you would would find out what about cost is -- cost effective. What's interesting the actual bail material itself is -- in the labor -- the -- probably under 4000 dollars when -- at the post and beam framing costs. It's probably a 15% higher than a wood frame house OK so a lot of traction here has to do but the romance the feel of which end up with."

" Two feet that's right it is a marvelous structure when you commit to a two foot thick wall. With plaster hand crafted trowel plaster well based this'll be a window almost a window seat here when you put this in. Now let's talk about the finished you have to have. Put some sort of border and laugh at something this. He'll actually drop the new conceded that at the rim of the -- you'll drop me a steel mesh of metal hardware cloth up there exactly and then you'll apply three or four. Coats of plaster depending on which -- particular finishing -- is hand trowel Cantrell the last from being a penny finish it's a very smooth. Very warm and soft that so there's no plaster plasterboard involved at all not at all excellent. -- that I can see how that would appeal to a lot of people expect especially in the southwest. Where you have that mass that's reminiscent of the early Adobe house exactly now and it's there it's great sound deadening material shore. And so you you've got the sustainability that -- taking care vote waste -- you've got the romance of the plaster in the thick walls you have the fact that it's a very official -- sound because it's so thick. What's the square footage this is 1725. Square feet interior space they'll have a couple of bedrooms and bath that's right we designed these to master bedrooms because we think this is a professional fire this house right in interest in music. Interior space -- Latin living takes place outside yes it does we have three outside rooms in this house yes. Now what about the structure of the roof because it's evident youthful hip roof style that's right you'll notice that we have. The structure that the truss system which is engineered obviously very light does not have -- bearing weight that you need in New England door in the Pacific northwest because you don't have the heavy rains and you don't have the the snout to carry sure. And the reflective material up there. The that's a new material by Louisiana-Pacific is called Techshield and what it does is it hasn't always beadboard decking when the roof from one side and on the other side actually as a reflective well material. -- and that the tests show on the this keeps the attic about ten degrees cooler. Excellent yes so just almost."

" Any place you can be taken advantage of using technology like this to make it more efficient absolutely. So this is. -- there a couple of other technologies that are being used to some of the other buildings around your -- though that's right we're introducing and our communities many advanced technologies in traditional materials as we can't. So we have thermal mass buildings made of ancient."

" Trades of the building. And we also have a product that's recycled styrofoam and cement let's talk first about the ago sure traditionally Adobe was simply. Mud bricks that were left out in the sun to dry and at some of the Saints drop added to them right yes and -- we can we still built into side with that type of Adobe. And then you put the F -- over the plaster on the interior and exterior protected. We have to be using fired ago because it has it has a little longer life and then what about this rust trot technique Russert."

" Is a new building material it's a recycled styrofoam. That is guaranteed to be recycled is not new -- well. That's kept at a landfills and it's flood it with cement that's is actually creates almost a block that's been filled crowded with additional cement and rebar and these are all. Building elements in building techniques that are part of the philosophy opposite -- project here to be at one with the -- in the environment thanks for the tour thank you very much."

At-Home Recycling Center
At-Home Recycling Center

Here s another great tip from BobVila.com. On average, Americans recycle less than a third of our waste. If we doubled our efforts and recycled 60 percent, we d save 35 million barrels of oil a year. The best way to get your whole family involved in the recycling effort is to set up a system that s easy to use. Color-code and label bins with pictures if necessary, and post instructions where everyone can read them. Offer kids the incentive of keeping the refund for washing out, organizing and redeeming the bottles and cans. Whether your community collects recyclables at the curb or you bring them to a recycling center yourself, get a list of what they take, what you re required to sort and what can be crushed. That will determine the number and size of containers you need. Check your city or town s web site or call 1-800-cleanup to find the recycling center nearest you. Some communities provide recycling bins for curbside collection, but you ll probably want to keep the muddy bins outside and set up a sorting or collecting center inside. Locate it as close as possible to the source of most of the waste: the kitchen. Building your recycling center into your kitchen cabinets is ideal. Cabinet makers now offer a great pull-out drawer or even corner carousels with specially made plastic bins to sort recyclables and keep them out of sight and out of the reach of small children and pets. If you don t have room in your kitchen, stack or line a shelf with dedicated bins or baskets in the mud room, laundry room, basement or garage, or convert a closet into your recycling center. Keep the can crusher, extra bags, twine, scissors and any other tools and supplies there. If your recycling center is far away and you don t go very often, store sorted materials outside the house in tightly covered bins or barrels. Make sure containers are well-rinsed to avoid attracting pests and to keep recycling a pleasant job for everyone. Recycling a Hardwood Floor
Recycling a Hardwood Floor

Bob visits with Leo Boudreau to learn how to recycle hardwood flooring from one room to another on a remodel project. First the floor must be salvaged. To do this a pry bar is use to lift and remove the wood piece by pieces in the opposite direction of installation. Then the wood is separated in grades depending on what shape the tongue and grooves are in or if they are there at all. From an economic standpoint, if the old floor was in good shape and the homeowner likes the look it makes sense, even in Bostons high cost labor market. Leo shows how the old flooring is installed as if it were new flooring. Ryley shows Bob how to attach two groove ends together by using a spline.

Carpet Recycling
Carpet Recycling

Did you know that if your old carpet is made of Nylon 6, it can be recycled? Over two hundred million pounds of old carpet is saved from landfills every year through the recycling of Nylon 6. Through a process of depolymerization and purification, Nylon 6 can be reharvested and reused in new carpet, with no loss of quality whatsoever.

Removing Junk and Debris
Removing Junk and Debris

Homeowner Sarah Monzon tells how she called 1-800-GOT-JUNK to take away the refuse from their basement, including demolition debris, old appliances, and a heavy stone tub, along with unwanted books, clothes, and household items. Don Valerio of 1-800-GOT-JUNK explains that their company is the world's largest junk-removal service. Given a two-hour window, all the junk will be loaded and carted away. Valerio explains that they will take away anything that is non-hazardous and work on a set pricing system. Estimates are given before the project begins. Valerio explains that their company makes daily trips to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and other charities, with 60-70% of the disposed property being given to these organizations for reuse. The company itself is not interested in reselling the property, rather moving it and giving it to people and organizations who can use it. Pricing is done on a volume basis and starts at $124. Valerio says that discarding old, unused property is the cheapest way to add space to the home. Valerio says their company's recycling and reuse efforts have resulted in a reduction of the amount of material being sent to local landfills.
