Building with ReddiForm ICFs

Bob talks with Ron Ardres of ReddiForm about the ReddiForm insulated concrete form (ICF) system that was used for the foundation walls. The ReddiForm blocks are made of expanded polystyrene. The blocks are lightweight and made of a material similar to drinking cups but with added flame retardants. ReddiForm's no-tie rebar chair is being placed on the tops of the forms to prepare for the rebar dowels that will connect the walls to the foundation. Holes are drilled into the slab to install sections of rebar through the ReddiForm blocks. These pieces of rebar tie the walls to the existing slab. The walls will be seven-and-a-half feet high with a structural slab or upper floor placed on top. The walls and the first floor slab will all be poured in one pour.

" Ron our dresses -- this -- he's developed this ready formed system run what are these made out. They're made out of expanded polystyrene they weigh nothing it's just like a drinking cup material right exactly same material. That except this material is modified for flame retardant. OK and so the idea is that we will build this up to whatever our height is and then pour concrete in them yes -- now what's this man putting down for this is our no tie rebar chair this will allow us to build the entire wall and drop the steel into that without tying it. What can act as he had over here -- what you what you're doing then is you're drilling into the concrete slab. To install these sections of rebar. Exactly right through there exactly and that's what ties the wall to the existing slab exactly in this they're for sheer off the wall off the forty. Okay and so how high is this going to be this going to be seven and a half foot high the first floor. And -- incorporated structural slab on top of it so there will be pouring the wall and the first floor slab get all in one pour yes with a different type of a form. Yes we're gonna use of foam form that goes wrong goes across from this wall to the back wall as a structural slab. And it has T beams in it. Meg uses his -- I can't wait to see it but we're running out of time."

Nail Sizes
Nail Sizes

Nails are classified both by their length in inches and by their "penny" size, written with "D" on the package. Here's how to determine the penny size of a nail. Take the length of the nail you need, subtract a half inch, and then multiply by four. For example, if you need a two and a half inch nail, subtract a half inch which leaves two, then multiply by four. This means you need an eight-penny nail.
