Western Red Cedar for the Porch

The Norwell home will have a big farmer's porch with a roof over it, running the whole width of the house. Western red cedar is being used for the construction of this porch. Bob talks with Peter Lang from the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association about the material. Western red cedar is renowned for its natural beauty and it can enhance the look of any house. Tongue-and-groove boards are being used in the construction. The boards are reversible, so either the rough or smooth side can face out. The boards can also be used either horizontally or vertically and in ceiling applications or as decking. Western red cedar is a "green" building material in that it's a naturally renewable resource. It is harvested in a sustainable manner is recyclable and biodegradable. Cedar is also, from a carpenter's perspective, a dream to work with.
