Tankless hot water heaters provide on-demand hot water without the need to continually store and heat water 24 hours a day. Aaron Siegel from Eemax joins Steve Easley at the EnergyWise House to explain how the company s products supply hot water for applications ranging from hand washing to drench showers, with a sophisticated thermostatic control to ensure precise outlet temperature. Whole-house units are activated by water flow and demand to draw only the energy required to meet hot water demand.

" Water heating is a substantial portion of a home's energy bill. Most homes have tanks and a water heater, where you have to heat the water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, not exactly energy efficient, but in an energy-wise home we're using the tank plus instantaneous-type water heater that gives you all the water you need on demand. Here today to tell us about that is Aaron Siegel from Eemax."

" Hey, how you doing?"

" How you doing?"

" Good to see you."

" A very unique product, tell us how it work."

" Absolutely. Actually, this is what we call our series 3 unit. It's a product"

" It engages for let's say the demand of like a kitchen sink. A low volume, let's say 1 gallon a minute, but then each successive heating module will turn on based upon the additional flow, for example the volume in a shower or multiple showers in the case of this product, and each one of this heating modules has a thermostatic feature, which allows you to very accurately regulate all the temperatures of microprocessors that regulate temperature plus or minus 1 degree from a temperature standpoint. So you can adjust that there and on setup you just set it up to what's your desired comfort level it is and basically the heater will maintain that throughout the operation of the product."

" So, this would provide enough hot water for 2 showers and 2 sinks?"

" Absolutely. Well, within the context for example, if you use the more modern let's say 2 to 2-1/2 of gallon a minute shower heads. The product certainly has the capacity to do that type of volume."

" It's amazing. This is such a small unit when you think about the tank-style heater."

" Yes."

" And the maintenance on this is very much through service?"

" Not really. Essentially what you have here is a product that really reduces the incidence especially if you have hard water conditions that typically that destroy a tank over a period of time for example, liming and calcifications are reduced significantly with this price because you don't have any heat demand on the heating element. Essentially what you have here is ambient temperature on this product until you have flow activation of each heating modules. So the incidence of liming and calcification, which will typically breakdown the heating element of the tank are significantly reduced with this type of technology."

" What do one of these costs?"

" This unit is around 500 dollars."

" Well, that's a----"

" We also make a junior version of this, which is around 400 dollars and it's a 2-heating module system for essentially 1 shower."

" Now if I've got a sink that's located way in the back part of the house that always takes forever for a hot water to get there, do you guys have a small unit that will----"

" Absolutely----."

" fit with that?"

" Absolutely. This is a product here. It's a single stage or a single-heating module unit and it's designed for under the sink handwashing type of applications, but we can also supply a unit with a thermostatic feature, which allows you to a---- for example if you have a long pipe or I'll just say your water heater is in the garage and you have a jacuzzi tub or some sort of master bedroom on the very far into the house. This product will have the ability to sense temperature when the hot water eventually got there from your tank. This unit being able to sense that temperature would essentially shut off and provide----"

" Oh."

" hot water to that location until the hot water got there."

" And how much energy do you have to make this subside?"

" Typically, in studies that we've done, we've----on normal usage, anywhere between 20-30 and upwards to 40%, so the savings is fairly substantial with this type of products."

" I wanna buy one of these. Where do I find one?"

" Basically, we have a network of wholesale distributors that handle our products plumbing supply houses, which are available through our website. So if you go to our website which is eemax.com, we have a list of distributors that you can get these products from locally. Each market has a basically a network of wholesalers that handle our product."

" Well, Aaron great information. Thank you."

" Thank you very much. Appreciate it."

Installing a Shower Fixture
Installing a Shower Fixture

Bob Vila meets with Carlos Leuchtmann from Blue Ridge Plumbing, who shows Bob the shower pan and layout of the new fixtures. Leuchtmann explains that the drain is off center due to structural supports in the floor that cannot be moved. Leuchtmann also points out the anti-scald restrictor and the dual-flow Moen shower fixture, which allows for either an overhead rain-type shower or a body spa with four wall sprayers. Leuchtmann shows Bob a tool for plumbers and electricians called the stud popper. The device makes a perfect hole in steel framing for running pipes or electrical wire. Once punched, the stud is fitted with a pipe tight that provides a feed for the pipes or wires and keeps them from touching the metal studs. Carlos also explains how sanding the pipe and adding flux creates a bonding surface for the solder to adhere to when sweating pipe.

Low-Flow Showerheads and Faucets
Low-Flow Showerheads and Faucets

Here's another great tip from BobVila.com. Showers account for more than one-fifth of the water Americans use every day. We can conserve more of this precious resource with a low-flow showerhead. If you re not convinced you need to cut your water flow, put a 2-quart pan under your showerhead and turn it on. If it takes less than 12 seconds to fill the pan, you could conserve. Low-flow showerheads limit flow to 2 and a half gallons per minute or less and cost between $8 and $50. Contrary to popular belief, they do not reduce the water pressure of your shower. Some mix the water with air, others pulse and some are elevated to provide a rain shower effect. For between $70 and $250, you can buy one that will even filter chlorine and other chemicals from your water for a truly clean shower that won t dry out your skin. Take a look at the end of your faucet: Most are threaded to receive an aerator. If your existing aerator has a number greater than 2.75 GPM written on it or there isn t one at all, it s an easy upgrade to install. Remove the old one by turning it to the left. If it s stuck, gently use vice grips or tongue-and-groove pliers. Add a piece of Teflon tape over the faucet threads before screwing on the new one to form a tight seal. Faucet aerators only cost $5 to $10 and will pay for themselves in water savings in only a few months. Installing faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads in your home is one of the best ways to reduce your environmental footprint, and it can save you 50 percent of your water and hot water costs to boot.
