" Fireplace technology has come a long way in recent years. In fact, many of these fireplaces are direct vent, very energy efficient, and you can even heat the room with it. Now the energy wise home has selected Heat & Glo as the fireplace manufacturer, and with me is Ross Morrison. Ross,"

" Hi."

" tell me about this unit and how it works."

" This is a gas direct vent fireplace though with a sealed combustion unit. It uses no indoor air for combustion. It just sends that all to the outside of the home, and then brings only outside air in for combustion, so it's extremely efficient. All you're gonna get is heat into the room and nothing back. And you don't get any back drafting or smoke like you do with some."

" Absolutely not of your type. Now, being direct vent, that means you can vent it directly out the back of a house. You don't have to have a flute that runs on top to the roof?"

" That's correct. You can go straight out, but if you want it to, you could go up to the roof or you can use a number of elbows and move around the house if you have, a kind of a funky insulation that you need to put in. Now, this here is a glass panel over the front----"

" Yeah."

" so it's not, this stays on all the time."

" Right."

" Not like a door that you open, right?"

" Exactly. It's a sealed chamber. Taking it off well gives you an opportunity to look inside. What we have is a ceramic logs that are built in here, and those will burn a lifetime. They're extremely lightweight and yet, extremely durable. And it is very amazing how light it is. Almost, it's deceiving, it's so lightweight. And also, you have the burner right inside along."

" Right. We use actually real wood. We mold the logs off of them, burn them, and then in the case of several of our products, we'll imbed the burner in there so that it looks like the log itself is on fire rather than the flames coming up to the base of the fireplace, but the material is actually a ceramic material patterned off a real wooden log."

" Exactly. Okay, tell me about the sidewalls here. They look pretty real as well."

" They are. They are again, it's a compressed ceramic fiber so they're really durable, and again, very lightweight. What it allows us to do is to create a true masonry look on the insides so you a look of a traditional fireplace, but at a fraction of the cost. Now you can use these to heat a room."

" Absolutely, in fact, you can go beyond that. This, you know, will not only heat the room you're in, but has the opportunity to adjust the heat in 3 different ways from this fireplace, so you could have the warmth and ambience of the fire in your great room, and yet, still be heating your master bedroom and a den as well."

" Now, how---- What is the output of this."

" It's output is about 33000 BTU's per hour."

" And this, what width does this come in? what's the biggest I can get one of these?"

" Well, we have, this is a standard 36-inch width but we go all the way up to a 50-width inch product called the Olympian."

" Wow. And what does a unit like this cost."

" This is about $2400."

" Okay. Let's check out the unit behind this."

" Oh, yeah."

" These units out there,"

" And this unit cost about how much?"

" About $3400."

" All right, they also have a fireplace here like it's a campfire."

" Yeah, a little campfire. This is portable. Again, it's made out of a ceramic material. It's very mobile. It's actually made to be portable so you have the ability to take this with you wherever you wanna go. If you want to go to tailgating, if you're gonna bring it on a picnic, you just pick it up, put it in the car, and go with you. Outside of that, it's again made out of ceramic fibers so you can burn it right on a wood deck outside your home, and burn it as long as you want. When you're done, all you have to do is shut the gas off in and go away. You don't have to worry about any embers or something that would start the fire."

" Now, what type of gas?"

" It will work on either natural gas or liquid propane."

" Great information. I look forward to see this in the house."

" Alright. You too. Thank you."

Direct Vent Fireplaces for Heat and Ambience

Bob visits a Heat n' Glo showroom where Ross Morrison shows him a variety of direct-vent gas fireplaces. With a sealed glass chamber there is no interplay of of room airno products of combustion will get into the room and it doesn't use any of the the room's already warm air for combustion. The fireplace inserts come with ceramic fiber logs. When the flames hit the logs they produce a nice glow. The logs are light, unbreakable, and last a lifetime. Ross shows Bob the 6000 TRXI, a premium model that is rated as a furnace. It has a beautiful masonry appearance inside and a pumps out enough BTUs to heat a 1200 - 1500 sq. ft. house. The fireplace also offers the option of turning the flames down or off or opening the climate control damper to cut the heat by one half.

Putting in a New Fireplace
Putting in a New Fireplace

The walls in the new addition to the home are just about ready for paint. The new fireplace will make this new in-law suite very cozy. Malcolm Gurney of The Fireplace Connection reviews features of the fireplace. It is a Majestic wood-burning fireplace that uses outside air for combustion. It operates like a standard wood stove with the doors closed while the fire is burning. Measurements for the fireplace were taken prior to installation, allowing for a six foot mantle. The pipe needs to be installed in-line with the peak of the roof. Thirty-degree offsets, the steepest degree available, will be used to install the pipe. A multiple number of offsets can be used in the installation. The fireplaces come with installation manuals to explain the process.

Count Rumford Fireplace
Count Rumford Fireplace

Fireplaces are a nice feature in any home. Count Rumford fireplaces, known for their heat efficiency, are tall and shallow, reflecting heat back into the room. Constructed from firebricks and refractory mortar, they will tolerate very high temperatures. The distinctive throat connecting the firebox to the flue wastes less heated room air.

Building a Rumford Fireplace
Building a Rumford Fireplace

The Rumford fireplace is being built and Bob reviews the herringbone construction process being used. The Rumford fireplace uses a design which is approximately 200 years old. The fireplace is tall and shallow to reflect a lot of heat and has a streamlined throat between the firebox and the flue. Heat Stop Refractory Mortar is used to withstand the high temperatures generated in the firebox. This mortar conforms to building codes. Bob then reviews the construction elements of the fireplace.
