Hot Spring Spas

To relax in our desert home, the EnergyWise House will be equipped with a hot tub from Hot Spring Spas. These portable spas bring energy efficient design and operation to hot tubs that are easy to operate and maintain. Hot Spring Spas use technologically advanced heating, cleaning, and circulation systems. They are fully insulated and foamed with fitted covers for better temperature retention and lower operating costs. Hot Spring Spas offers a dedicated circulation pump for continuous water filtration at a lower usage rate than traditional pumps that cycle on and off, and a warm air induction system that captures warm air produced by the jet pump and transfers it to the tub water.

" The spa we selected for the energy wise home is a hot spring spa, and with me is Bob Boyd from Jet Spa USA. Tell me why the spa is more energy efficient than other models on the market."

" Well Steve, hot springs has the most energy efficient spa in the market and they're able to do that because everything is fully foam from the inside of the skirt. The skirt meaning the siding of the spa. Not only are they fully foam, but they have layers of high-density polyurethane foam in it. This is the same stuff that they use in commercial freezers, so that's what makes it energy efficient."

" What about the pumps and so forth?"

" The pumps are energy efficient as well. There's a warm air induction system within the pumps, and that captures all of the heat that's generated by the pumps. And it puts it directly into the water so it's not expanding out and going into that air."

" A lot of people are going from in-ground spas to above-ground because of that reason."

" Now this is electric heat, right?"

" Yes, it is."

" Tell me about how many pumps does this have?"

" This is a 2-pump system."

" Okay. And can you just walk through the features of this spa?"

" Sure. This is of that we have selected here, and this is the spa room made by hot springs. It has many features on it. It's got comfort control switches here where you can divert the power. No matter where you're sitting in the spa"

" outside connection as well as an inside connection to turn your jets on or your lights, so you can do it from the outside of the spa or you can do it from the inside. That will prevent you from turning anything on. If you're already in, you won't have to get up out of the spa."

" Bob, tell me about the seating arrangement of the spa."

" Well this particular spa seats 6 adults comfortably. If you noticed, there is a reclining, if you will, chair on this side here, but it will seat 6 comfortably. There's a cool-off deck on this side. If you're too hot, and you've got the temperature up to 104, and you wanna cool off, you can sit up on the cooling deck here. So that's a great feature of the house. As far as children, you probably could seat 8 people altogether if you have children in here."

" Now what does 1 of these costs?"

" This? The retail value of this particular spa is in the neighborhood of just under $7000 dollars."

" Wow."

" Now this have many special features in terms of how it keeps the water clean in a purifier. Well, it's on the 24-hour circulation pump. That will keep the water filtration. It will keep the water clean for you. There's 2 different kinds of systems that you can go. You can go with the bromine chlorine system that you can apply to the water or you can go with a chemical-free system. So it's just a matter of choice."

" Explain chemical free."

" Chemical free. There's a product out there that has no chemicals in it. It's just a non-chlorinated non-bromine system that you can use. It's very simple to use. It's not rocket science. It takes test strips. You dip them in, and it tells you exactly how much of what to put in."

" I see. Now, the way these are manufactured, this is just a big sheet of plastic, and is it put in through a lot of press so that it molds it to the shape of the mold?"

" Yes."

" And then I guess they put in the jets in the pump?"

" They put in the jets. I've been fortunate enough to visit the hot springs company several months ago located in San Diego, and I got to tour the manufacturing plant. It was quite interesting on seeing how they put these together. It's just 1 sheet of the acrylic, and it just melts right down into the spa, and it's just really amazing, and just how they put the pumps together, it's just a wonderful spa."

" Well, great information. Thanks again for being here."

" My pleasure. Thanks for having me."

Heating with Radiant Floor Mats
Heating with Radiant Floor Mats

The existing basement floor was a cold concrete slab that will now have ceramic tile floor installed over radiant heat mats. Bob talks with Kevin Murray from NuHeat Inc. about the electrical radiant heating pads. The pads go underneath the tile and can reach a temperature of about 92 degrees. Using the pads to heat a room uses about the same amount of electricity lighting the room. The pads plug into a programmable thermostat so the heating can be set to come on at regular times during the day. Murray then demostrates how the pad is installed. First, it is dry-fitted to the floor and set to fit the general area. The pad is then affixed to the floor using an adhesive mud. After the mud has been put on the concrete and the pad set in place, a float is used to press it down. The pad is made of a porous polycarbon fabric. After all the pads are put in place, the tile setter can put in the mastic and tile. Mike Blangiardi from Portsmouth Quality Flooring set and grouted the tile after letting the thinset sit for 24 hours. The homeowners selected a DalTile ceramic tile for the laundry and bathroom area. The homeowners should wait another 24 hours once the grout is complete before using the room.

Individual Zone Heating and Cooling
Individual Zone Heating and Cooling

Bob meets with Meredith Schelp from Mitsubishi Electric HVAC to learn about the City-Multi HVAC system that will heat and cool the Manhattan Brownstone floor-through apartment. This system allows for simultaneous heating and cooling of separate zones throughout the apartment, so that a busy kitchen can be cooled while a quiet den or bedroom receives heat. The system uses outdoor and indoor units with variable drives to accommodate delivery demands. There will be three units installed in the apartment, each above the ceiling in vestibules where the ceilings can be dropped to hide them. Joseph Yannaco of Polar Mechanical Corporation explains that the interior units control the temperature and delivery of the conditioned air. The thermostatic controls run on sensors, so there's no need to keep the panels mounted visibly on interior walls. Ducts carry the heated or cooled air throughout the apartment.
