LP TechShield

TechShield radiant barrier sheathing can help homeowners conserve energy by keeping up to 97 percent of the sun's radiant heat from entering the attic. TechShield, the only radiant barrier sheathing with post-lamination incising, effectively allows moisture to escape from the foil side of the board should it get wet. Studies have shown that using a radiant barrier can effectively reduce the amount of energy required to cool the home by up to 20 percent. And TechShield radiant barrier sheathing adds no additional time or labor costs to the construction, because the foil is already laminated to the board.

" Hi, Steve!"

" I understand this house has got TechShield on it. It feels pretty cool."

" That's correct. Most of the houses of the subdivision have TechShield also."

" So Bob, tell me about TechShield."

" Well, you see, TechShield is a radiant barrier sheathing. It's an aluminum foil backed by craft paper, which is applied to a standard sheathing oriented strand board that you see on the roof anywhere. We roll over the aluminum with some of device that resembles the meat-tenderizing wheel, which incises the board and causes the board to breath, should it be rained on, prior to the felting overnight, so it'll equalize and stabilize."

" Bob, how does TechShield install?"

" Well Steven, to install just like standard-oriented strand board on the roof with the aluminum down. It's fastened to the roof with a standard 8-inch gap around it, and then felt in standard roofing for that market whether it would tile or asphalt shingles are applied directly over that."

" Bob, it's important for the shiny side to go down."

" That's correct, Steve. The radiant barrier has to be on the bottom to the board facing into the attic and the reason that it does is the radiant energy has to come down through the shingles and or through the tile, strikes the OSB, goes through that, hits the aluminum and bounces back out again."

" And how much does bounce back out?"

" About 97% of the radiant energy bounce is backed out again."

" Bob, is this kind of pretty durable, will the foil stand here to the board?"

" Yes, it will Steve. The board is awarded for 20 years."

" Where can you buy TechShield?"

" Steve, you can get it at any home improvement retailer or pro-contractor retailer."

" Bob. Thanks for being here."

" Thanks, Steve."

Replacing the Roof: Sheathing to Asphalt Shingles and Skylight Installation

Bob flashed back to the installation of the new roof. First the crew removed the old layers of roofing material from the barn. Next they added a layer of Louisiana Pacific oriented strand board (OSB) over the original sheathing. It's manufactured with thin wafers of wood, resins and wax compressed under intense heat. When used as roof sheathing it's extremely resistant to moisture damage. Then they stapled down a layer of felt paper and marked with chalk lines to lay out the courses of asphalt shingles. Since these are double layer shingles, they're fastened along the pre-marked white line to assure that both layers are attached to the roof. Frames for the Velux VSE skylights were installed. These vented skylights will be operated with a hand-held remote. Copper step flashing is added to the side of the skylights and the asphalt roof shingles are fastened up to it.
