" Hi, I'm Steve Easley here at Bob Vila's energy wise house, and on this project, we're gonna be using open web joist, and these joists are stronger and lighter and much more cost effective. Now this product is made by Open Joist 2000. Let's go talk to Michael Shamp and find out how they're made and how they work."
" Open Joist 2000 is a floor truss. It's mainly used for joist on a floor. As you can see, this product has open web, meaning that you don't have to drill holes or anything like that. The ducts can be inserted in the web like so, and then it can be inserted anywhere you want to all along the joist. You can run all of your plumbings, electrical ducts through that joist without adding structural features to the house and keeping the original design of this energy wise house. This will give you a good open web system without damaging the structural aspect of the joist itself when you put them in on the floor. Another big advantage of that this joist has is because of the end block detail that you can trim on site 5.5 inches on both ends for adjustability. This also has another advantage where you can buy this product from your local lumber yard at every foot increment, and then once you get on site, you just trim it back and they get fit. This joist is manufactured with a finger joint. As you'll notice, there are no play connectors on the joints. It's held in together with fingers and a waterproof glue. This will prevent rattling sounds from plumbing. It's gonna help you in the recovery of your joist. If it's loaded improperly, it's gonna recover it better than if you do on metal plate connectors. Because of the unique design of this house, walls are at 45 degrees, 60 degrees, 30 degrees, never at 90 degrees, this product is quite unique that it can accommodate these walls by being trimmable on site. We do supply engineering drawings or install drawings to accommodate the framer that he will be putting the right joist at the right location. Open Joist 2000 designed a floor system that will tie every joist together to make it less bouncy, less vibration by tying the whole floor together with a 2 x 4, 2 x 6, which we in the industry call it a strongback, tie the whole floor together so it doesn't matter where you are on the floor, the load will be evenly distributed to the whole floor system to make it a strong sturdy floor. The other advantage that this product has is because of its wide surface, the sub-floor, the fly whether the USB that is nailed to the joist itself gives it a sturdy and much wider surface to nail into. When you do walk on this floor, you're gonna feel like you're walking on a solid floor. There's no give, there's no bounce, there's no squeak. 1 important factor that we're using with Open Joist 2000 is that every piece is tested to twice the design load before coming out of the plant so you're sure of a high-quality product before you get it on sight. Open Joist 2000 can be used in a single family home like this 1. It can be used in renovations, remodeling. It can be used in multi-families or like commercial application. Any type of application in the construction industry can use Open Joist 2000."
" Thanks, Mike. Not only are these joists more cost effective because they're stronger and they're lighter, they can span longer distances, but they're also more efficient for the environment because they're using smaller pieces of timber, they're much more resource efficient."
