" Over 90% of all the new homes built today come with air conditioning. In fact, most of the heat gaining homes as a matter of fact in California here, up to 45% of the design cooling well is a result of heat gained through a window. Well, in the energy-wised home, we're using some very energy efficient windows made by Philips, which reduced the amount of heat from the sun that gets to the glass by as much as 64%. With me is John [unk], vice president of marketing at Philips. John, thanks for being here. Tell me about Philips window."
" Well, I'll tell you. This product that's being used in the energy-wise house is a really good fit for this project because the unique design of the window really lends itself to exceptional energy performance."
" Okay. I noticed that this is a vinyl window and vinyls doesn't conduct heat nearly as well as aluminum does. Aluminum will conduct heat a thousand times greater than the vinyl, so this is a more energy efficient frame as well."
" Absolutely. Absolutely."
" Well, the big secret lies in me deep pockets for the insulating glass. Most windows will take insulating glass of 3/4 inch thick. This is double that. It's 112 inch and allows us to triple glaze the product. It also maintains ample air space in between, which is excellent for thermal performance."
" Now, this has a specter-selective low e-coatings on them. This is a silver coating on the glass. Can we talk about that?"
" Yeah. Sure, sure. Actually, 2 surfaces have the coatings; the outboard light and the middle light, and they both have low e-sources, double low-e that we also fill the air gaps with argon. So we get exceptional solar heat gain ratings and view factors."
" So John, tell me about the NFRC label and how that relates to your product."
" Yeah, the NFRC label has been a great thing for the window industry. It's done by a 3rd party organization. It's an unbiased test, and really, it lends itself to an Apples comparison with window products and energy performance. The label goes into 3 different categories; the U factor, solar heat gain coefficient, invisible light transmission."
" Yeah, let's talk about each of those."
" Sure. Well, of course, in a climate like California here, solar heat gain coefficient is, by far, the most important of the 3 categories because that's a measure of how much solar heat is allowed through the window into the dwelling. And the more that can be eliminated from coming in means the less you can up to on your air conditioning and your cooling bills are gonna be much lower."
" Now, this 1 has a very low solar heat gain coefficient. You've got 0.26, which means only 26% of the sun's heat is getting through the glass."
" Exactly."
" Having a low number there is important."
" Absolutely."
" Tell me about the U factor. Is it in this product?"
" Yeah. That's some very, very low U factor over so the numbers are better, and this product has a 1-7 U factor, which his very, very good. U factor is the measure of how much heat is allowed to escape to a product. A U factor is more important in cold climates because it can measure how much furnace heat will escape through a window. You're interested, of course, in keeping furnace heat inside the home. Therefore, you don't have to run it as much."
" Sure. So with the low e-coatings, they deflect that heat and don't allow it to escape."
" Now, let's talk about the frame itself."
" Sure."
" Frames are important."
" The frames are important. This frame, the way it's designed, lends itself to excellent thermal properties as well. As you can see, if you slice the window in half, it's got multiple chambers. It's got interior walls. Those are valuable for several reasons; 1st of all, structurally. It makes the product very, very strong. And also, if these were hollow with no interior walls, the hot air would only have to go through 1 additional wall to get into the home. Because we have all these air pockets, which air pockets are great insulator."
" I see."
" you just don't get that hot air coming into the home or in a cold climate, you don't get the cold there coming through."
" Okay. Now, tell me about the paint. You said there's some special paint on this window?"
" Yeah, this has a very unique paint for this project. These windows are actually gray on the exterior, and that is a paint that is applied to the vinyl. And the neat thing about it is it's actually heat-reflective paint. Dark colors will absorb heat, and oftentimes, will be detrimental to the window and the performance because those dark colors trap the heat and then can actually break down the insulating glass. Because this reflects heat, none of that happens, and nor does that heat went to get through the frame and into the home."
" Okay, John, any other benefits?"
" Well, yeah, Steve. This product has a lot of other benefits. It's very, very structurally strong. We even get a commercial rating of 60 on this product, which is virtually unheard of in a vinyl window."
" That's what design pressure when loaded."
" Exactly."
" It was 50 pounds per square foot."
" Exactly, exactly. So it's got exceptional ratings for that. You know, some additional benefits of the low-e glass, naturally, it will help lower your cooling and heating bills. In addition to that, it will help prevent harmful UV rays that the sun has from coming into your home. Those are the rays that will fade carpet, and furnishings, and walls, etc. So your dwelling is gonna look nicer longer. Additionally, low e-glass in a cold weather climate will actually keep the interior temperature of the glass warmer than will a piece of glass that doesn't have low-e."
" And less condensation."
" Absolutely. Less condensation would form on the glass. Condensation happens when hot moist air meets a cold surface. If the glass surface is warmer, you're not gonna get that, and that can help even things such as reducing the chance of mold buildup."
" If I wanna buy windows like these, where would I go?"
" Well, we have a dealer network set up throughout the country. We're coast to coast from Maine to California. Best place to go would be our website, markewindows.com. We have a dealer listing in there. Go to your state, and you'll find many dealers to choose from."
" Well John, thanks for being here."
" Okay. Thank you."
