" Hi, this is Tim Woods from the Internet Home Alliance. Today, we're going to install our Hughes Network System directly satellite system here at our home in Quechee, Vermont. What we're going to do is we're going to connect the system up with our home director network connection center in the basement. In that way, it will allow us to distribute 2-way Broadband communication throughout the entire home that will include our entertainment system DirecTV and broadband 2-way satellite communication through the internet service. After surveying our side here in Quechee, Vermont, we decided to put our satellite antenna on a pole in the yard. This is going to help us in the future with maintenance service and also future trigger. We know from our location here in Quechee, Vermont by looking at our manual that we're looking for a satellite that reside a 238 degrees on our compass. We use our compass to find that position in on the side and then we adjust our satellite dish to be able to get a strong signal. Once we get that strong signal, we're ready to do some fine tune. To do that, we're going to use a professional device called a spectrum analyzer. This will help us position the satellite in the appropriate direction to make sure that we have the strongest signal. Right now, we've got a very strong signal coming into the antenna. Let's make sure that we can get a strong signal on our TV program. Well, we've got that. Now, let's make the connection between the satellite and the network connection center on the basement. There is one more step before we can connect up with the network connection center on the basement and that's the bigger trench from the satellite antenna to the network connection center itself in the basement. To do that, we're going to install an underground cable that's specially rated. Down here in the basement are huge network system satellite cables coming into the network connection center. These 2 cables represent our internet----these 2 cables represent our entertainment and our TV. It will be distributed to the flat-top boxes around the home. Once these cables are installed into the network connection center, we'll be able to distribute all of this entertainment cable access throughout an entire house."

Installing Electrical Wiring in an Old Home
Installing Electrical Wiring in an Old Home

Bob meets Barry Driscoll, the electrician who is wiring a third-floor sub panel. The panel feeds air handlers, bedrooms, bathrooms and an entertainment area. At the time the house was built in 1892, gas, not electricity, was used for lighting. It wasn't until the 1920s that electricity was used in the house. City of Cambridge electrical inspector looks at the sub panel for adequate size and proper location.

Bob joins electrician Jose Rodriguez as he installs wiring in metal framing at the storm-ready house. Rodriguez uses plastic boxes with plastic flanges to house the wiring. Rodriguez also attaches a protective nail plate over the wiring where it crosses the furring strips. The wires are then tied to the studs and run down to the box where they are connected.

In this segment Bob meets Eddie Fisher, the master electrician on the Brooklyn project's infrastructure team. The team of five electricians from AC/DC Electric is rewiring the building from basement to roof deck. Fisher's team is pre-wiring the building for telephones, computer and cable TV. New York City building codes often require the use of materials and techniques not often seen in residential construction. Codes enacted in the summer of 2003 in New York City require a separate power line from the main electrical box to each GFI (Ground Fault Interrupt) circuit. Also required by code in this building is the use of BX, or metal-shielded, cable. BX is a rigid, flexible metal conduit with a wire bundle, consisting of individually insulated conductors covered by a flexible spiral-wound layer of metal. BX will typically last longer than vinyl-clad cable and may prevent some inadvertent damage in the future.
