Weatherproof Doorframes

Bob Vila is joined by Rick Hagel of BMS Framesaver to preview the unique doorframes that will be installed in the EnergyWise House. By adding a section of composite materials to the base of the doorframe, Framesaver doorframes eliminate damage caused by moisture and insects.

" Taking care of an old house can be an endless proposition and sometimes it's a thankless job, but one thing that can go wrong is rot and termite damage to your exterior wood jams, your outside doors. Rick Heil is here from Frame Savers to tell us a little bit about a product that can make this job. Well, you can guarantee this for life, right?"

" That's correct, Bob."

" So this is a regular wood frame and then what?"

" Basically, we have a wood composite, which is a plastic and wood mixture. Then, you're going into the bottom----"

" Uhm."

" Does not absorb moisture, will not rot. Termites won't eat it. This is where the problem comes in. Notice if the door frame is rotted, it's basically because of moisture with the frame saver; the timber tick will not absorb moisture. Insects won't bother. Termites wont' eat it. That eliminates the problem. If you just wanted to take care of the rotted part of the door, you could use what we call the kit, which is a solid piece of a composite. You'd simply cut out the ascending part of the door frame and replace it with a timber tick. Once again, it's a high density polyethylene and wood flour mixed together, will not absorb moisture; will not rot."

" Exactly. So that when you go to replace the door, you can specify that your new exterior door have one of these frame saver jams, right?"

" That's correct. You could----you would specify the frame saver in your pre-hung door unit----"

" Uhm."

" or you could buy a knot down in a door frame where you----you continue to use your existing door."

" Right. So if you're going to use the same door you've got, but you've got a rotted jam like we had here, you can go to the home improvement center or your local lumber yard and you can order this. It looks like an ordinary jam, but that bottom 6 inches----"

" That's correct."

" It's just like that. It's never gonna decompose."

" That's correct."

" The bugs are never gonna go after it."

" Absolutely. And that's what makes it really nice. It's really transparent. You don't need to use any different tool, no different painting technique----"

" Right."

" everything is the same."

" Exactly. And the cost is pretty much comfortable, isn't it?"

" It is. You'll have a little up-charge because of the composite, but it's the small up-charge that when you'd taken to account replacing a door, it's a very small amount."

" Terrific. Thanks Rick."

" Thank you, sir."
