When you've got a slotted screw that's been so badly damaged that a screwdriver won't turn the head, try this. Set a punch into the slot, off center to the right at an angle. With a hammer, you should be able to budge the screw just enough to finish with locking pliers. Replace it with a philips head screw.
Bob joins Dan Gerry from Tranquility Plumbing as they punch holes in the metal studs for the CPVC tubing that will carry the hot and cold water through the house. Gerry admits that it is somewhat easier to install plumbing in metal studs, because it's faster to punch out the metal than to drill standard wood framing. Gerry also describes how drains, waste pipes, and flow pipes were set before the slab was poured. The CPVC pipe runs through the punched holes and is fitted with pipe tights to protect the pipe from puncture and eliminate noise from vibrating pipes against metal studs. Bob watches as a sink tie-in is cut, fitted, and installed with adhesive.
In the master bedroom, "Autumn Wheat" from the Bob Vila Signature Series paint line was applied to the walls to provide a transition from the master bath. Curtis chose an eclectic mix of pieces from different periods to create a comfortable and functional room. The designer also chose strong reds and woods to give the room some visual punch. Smith + Noble fabrics are used throughout the room, including bedding, rugs and window treatments.
Bob and Chris Vila join Andy Grover of Hallsted Welles Associates for the installation of a new, flexible, stainless-steel chimney liner. Grover has already completed exploratory demolition at the smokebox, above the fireplace. A probe the width of the chimney opening was inserted and run down the chimney to determine the flue length. Then a video-scan camera was inserted and run the length of the chimney to look for any obstructions or irregularities that might need to be cleared. Grover is using a heavy-gauge, 304 stainless-steel alloy liner with a lifetime warranty for wood-burning fireplace use. Grover explains that there was once a cast-iron firebox that is no longer present. The decision to use a flexible liner rather than terra cotta means they need only punch a small hole in the brick, rather than tearing out the chimney wall from the fireplace to the roof. A nose cone and hook are attached to the liner and it is winched up from the roof. Once in place, a 30-watt draft inducer will be installed to ensure steady drafting for the new chimney.
Here's a tool that will making routing out hinge mortises easier and more precise than doing it by hand. It's a router hinge template, and it can be adjusted to the size of your door. Drive in the pins that hold the template in position, then rout each mortise to the depth your hinges need. Remove thetemplate and position your hinges in the mortise. Use a center punchto make the pilot holes for your screws. A router hinge template is especially useful when you've got a lot of doors to hang.
