Making Partitions for the Closet
Making Partitions for the Closet

Bob and Ryley are busy in the garage workshop ripping 4-by-8 sheets of birch plywood for use as partitions in the master bedroom closet. Ryley has created a template to pre-drill the holes for shelf brackets. The template is temporarily secured to the partitions and the holes for the shelf support brackets are hand drilled.

Storage Cabinets with Plastic Leg Extensions for the Finished Basement
Storage Cabinets with Plastic Leg Extensions for the Finished Basement

Bob talks with Jered Hamlin of Slide-Lok about the built-in sotrage furniture being constructed and installed. Slide-Lok is a garage storage cabinet that can also be used in the home. Plastic leg extensions are used to keep the cabinets off the floor. Slide-Lok cabinets are assembled with a slide-in-place technology and dovetail joinery. This cabinet system can be configured and purchased online. A small bead of glue is applied in each of the joints before the shelf slides in. Nailers are slid into place to attach the unit to the wall. Adjustable plastic legs are put into place to keep the cabinet off the floor and correct any inconsistencies in the floor level. Each unit comes with all the installation screws and hardware needed to put the unit together.

Installing Custom Closets
Installing Custom Closets

Bob enters the master suite to talk with Marcy Weisberg and Brad Bendell who are installing the totally custom California Closets. Marcy explains that the homeowners asked for 'his' and 'hers 'sections in their 12' x 6' closet space. The 'hers' section is separated into long hanging with shelves above, double hanging for tops and bottoms, mid-length hanging with shelves above, and lots of shoe storage. Brad tells us that the Closet frames are built out of high-pressure furniture grade particle board with a mahogany finish. He first screws a metal bar into the studs with a 2" tempered screw . After that he puts a cover onto the rail to dress it up and then installs the vertical partitions for strength. Next he hangs the horizontal members. The hardware on the cam-locking shelf is inserted into the vertical partitions and the cam locks into place much like a piece of knock-down furniture. Brad then does the same at the bottom to complete the frame. Marcy explains that the closet systems are priced by component - partitions, shelves, and accessories. After the system is installed it will be separated from the rest of the master suite by a Japanese Shoji screen.

Site Work and Frostwall in Preparation for Precast Foundation
Site Work and Frostwall in Preparation for Precast Foundation

Bob teams up with, Michael Shiels, the projects general contractor, to discuss the foundation prep work that is underway. The home site began as a piece of raw forest on the side of a hill. The contractors team sliced a shelf out of the hill to lay a flat foundation. Local codes required a four-foot below the frost line base for the foundations frost wall.

Excavation and Foundation Work on the Rowley Victorian
Excavation and Foundation Work on the Rowley Victorian

Bob joins Tim Berky to hear how the foundation and footing will be handled for the Victorian kitchen and deck addition. The mason is due to arrive the next day to repair the brick face along the exterior of the house and set a 12-inch block topped with 8-inch block shelf along the back to allow for a brick top. The crew will then pour a "rat slab" or filler slab along the bottom. None of the new foundation work will be visible when it is done because of new framing. Berky is pouring three yards of cement for the new footing. Once the mason is finished with the new foundation work, they will remove siding, the roof and doors, cut electricity and plumbing, and the gut the interior of the existing mudroom. The mudroom sill is rotted, so Berky's advice is that it be removed entirely and rebuilt.

Installing a Mirror and other Glasswork

Bob meets with Bill Brody from Classic Glass and learns how to install a large mirror, a glass shelf, and a glass partition wall inside a shower.

At-Home Recycling Center
At-Home Recycling Center

Here s another great tip from BobVila.com. On average, Americans recycle less than a third of our waste. If we doubled our efforts and recycled 60 percent, we d save 35 million barrels of oil a year. The best way to get your whole family involved in the recycling effort is to set up a system that s easy to use. Color-code and label bins with pictures if necessary, and post instructions where everyone can read them. Offer kids the incentive of keeping the refund for washing out, organizing and redeeming the bottles and cans. Whether your community collects recyclables at the curb or you bring them to a recycling center yourself, get a list of what they take, what you re required to sort and what can be crushed. That will determine the number and size of containers you need. Check your city or town s web site or call 1-800-cleanup to find the recycling center nearest you. Some communities provide recycling bins for curbside collection, but you ll probably want to keep the muddy bins outside and set up a sorting or collecting center inside. Locate it as close as possible to the source of most of the waste: the kitchen. Building your recycling center into your kitchen cabinets is ideal. Cabinet makers now offer a great pull-out drawer or even corner carousels with specially made plastic bins to sort recyclables and keep them out of sight and out of the reach of small children and pets. If you don t have room in your kitchen, stack or line a shelf with dedicated bins or baskets in the mud room, laundry room, basement or garage, or convert a closet into your recycling center. Keep the can crusher, extra bags, twine, scissors and any other tools and supplies there. If your recycling center is far away and you don t go very often, store sorted materials outside the house in tightly covered bins or barrels. Make sure containers are well-rinsed to avoid attracting pests and to keep recycling a pleasant job for everyone. Jonathan Adler Reviews Interior Design Finishes
Jonathan Adler Reviews Interior Design Finishes

Bob joins the project's interior designer, Jonathan Adler, in the guest bedroom to discuss the decor. Adler used a Lucite shelf to add storage space without making the small room appear smaller. The rug is goatskin and the bed is from the West Elm Catalog, a local Brooklyn retailer that specializes in "urban living". The room is painted in Wheatland Beige from Bob's Signature line of paints. In the second bedroom Adler borrowed ideas from David Hicks to design a sumptuous office. He uses bold patterns, colors and materials to mix pop art with luxury. Bob points out a 1970 reproduction Thonet rocking chair made with chrome instead of the typical bentwood.
