Adding a New Non-Weight-Bearing Steel Wall to the Container House
Adding a New Non-Weight-Bearing Steel Wall to the Container House

Bob talks to Derek Mercer and Delwin Carter of Tampa Armature Works about how to treat the steel exterior of the building to make it look more like a conventional house. The steel panel is a 16-gauge sheet metal which has been cut and grinded to fit the house. A recess has been cut into the sheets in place so the new sheet fits flush against the structure. Holes have been cut into the sheet at regular intervals which will serve as weld plugs through which the sheet can be secured to horizontal steel strips on the other side. A MIG welder secures the sheet through the weld holes, reducing the amount of vibration during high winds and preventing buckling. Then stitch welding is done on the inside. Then a grinder is applied so the wells will not be visible when the surface is finished. A plasma cutter is used to cut a window opening into the steel. In effect, a steel partition has been installed, creating a new outside wall and porch, while the original shipping container still provides structural integrity to the home.

Brick Facade Restoration
Brick Facade Restoration

Bob meets with Allan Cox from Nawkaw Corporation, on the front of the New York restoration project to discuss the bricks. The bricks were aged and roughed up with a grinder prior to installation to give them an antique appearance. This process also de-glosses the surface of the brick so pigments can be added. After three attempts, the New York City Landmarks Commission approved the pigments added to the brick. To further conform to the Commission's requests, sand dust must be sprayed into the finish to refract additional light.

Trimming the Chimney with Fieldstone
Trimming the Chimney with Fieldstone

The structure for the fireplace is now being trimmed out with real stone. Bob talks with John Nadler of Plymouth Quarries about the stone being used. In this case, real stone is cut thin so it can be applied like a manufactured veneer. The stone is a New England fieldstone from Connecticut. The stone can be cut with a hammer, a four-inch grinder, or a wet saw. Because the stone is so thin, it can be cut quite easily. It costs approximately $12-15 a square foot. In contrast to traditional stone which weighs about 50 pound to the square foot, this is a lightweight stone product weighing less than 15 pounds to the square foot. The installation can go from the top down as it does not require any structural footings underneath. Bob talks with Joseph McDonough of McDonough Masonry. McDonough built the original chimney when the house was built over 25 years ago. A grout bag is used to squeeze the mortar into the joints between the stones. After two to three hours, once the mortar is set, McDonough uses a pointed stick to scratch out the joints. He then brushes the joints to clear any fine leftover particles.
