Kitchen Space Design
Kitchen Space Design

Bob joins homeowner Julie Graham and Merillat rep Faith Allen to discuss the new Merrilat kitchen that Julie has planned. Merillat has developed a new concept that they call "organomics" to help homeowners overcome some of the problems most commonly encountered in a designing a kitchen. Organomics is a blending a organization and ergonomics that allows the homeowner to take a look at the space beforehand and divide it up into activity-based zones. In the case of Julie's kitchen, the space is divided up into a storage zone with pantry, utility cabinet, and refrigerator, a sink zone for clean up, a cooking zone, a food prep zone, a planning zone encompassing the island, and then an eating zone in the nook. It's important to consider the interrelationship of all of these zones before ordering your cabinets.

Breakfast Nook & Kitchen

We painted our breakfast nook & kitchen with a paint for bathrooms and kitchens. The paint in the breakfast nook shows all the flaws. Would repainting it with a satin or flat finish help cover the flaws? Also what type of paint, satin or…

Tour of the Master Bedroom
Tour of the Master Bedroom

In the master bedroom Bob notes the soothing putty wall color and green-painted nook that houses the bathroom's glass block wall. He shows us the antique style Regency ceiling fan and how it fits the home's original time period. Outside the master bedroom, Bob opens up the laundry closet housing a new Energy Star compliant Kenmore Calypso washer and dryer. Down the hall, he peeks into the guest bathroom with its tumbled travertine tiles, and Kohler Memoirs water closet and vanity.

Reviewing the Layout of the New Hurricane-Resistant Home
Reviewing the Layout of the New Hurricane-Resistant Home

Bob and homeowners Teresa Fogolini and Jim Minardi meet with Scott Buescher of Mercedes Homes to review the layout for their new storm-ready home. Buescher shows the house plans and layout for the Jacqueline model that has four bedrooms, a two-car garage, a central kitchen with a family room and breakfast nook, a combination dining and living area, and a master suite. The house will have many hurricane-resistant features, including the solid wall system made of concrete reinforced with steel bar and steel mesh. The roof system will also be designed to resist hurricane-strength winds. It will be built with engineered trusses that are tied down with hurricane straps wet set into the concrete walls. The trusses will be covered with 5/8-inch plywood decking to complete a very strong structure.

Structured Wiring Installed
Structured Wiring Installed

Bob meets Tim Woods from the Internet Home Alliance at the Home Director network connection center in the basement. It's where all the structured wiring comes in and where the main controls happen: 2 +2 (cat-5 and RJ), cable broadband, security link-up, telephone, etc. Because the homeowners are a dual career couple they need to be connected to each other (home office to the studio) and to the outside world in a broadband environment. In the kitchen Larry Hicks of Home Director is installing some cable for a universal 2 + 2 outlet for TV, telephone or data near the breakfast nook providing flexibility for use of a phone, screen, etc. Looking at the Alliance's wiring plan, Tim points out the security camera at the front door and the ADT iCenter security system. The study/screening room will be a real media center with speakers for dolby stereo running through the ceiling, cable broadband, and a Panasonic high definition TV. There willl be speakers throughout the house allowing different music to play in diffferent rooms all controlled from the audio center in the kitchen. The Cisco Aironet system is a wireless network for the home allowing the homeowner to put a wireless card into his laptop and wirelessly port the web anywhere in the house. Because this is an old house in which they are trying to preserve the original plaster and lath walls, the installation of the structured wiring has required different tools and is a much slower process than in new construction, but it can be done.

Tour of the Completed Kitchen
Tour of the Completed Kitchen

Bob tours the open-plan kitchen with its Merillat cherry cabinets and salvaged green breakfast nook-the only remaining feature from the original kitchen. The kitchen features durable black Silestone countertops, which work well with the stainless steel finish of the new Thermador residential stove. Bob points out the well-planned coffee station and pantry area with its Whirlpool fridge and sleek Thermador dishwasher. He finishes up on the new Kohler sinks and faucets.

nook

So I take it you painted with a latex semi-gloss. Yes a satin or eggshell will show less flaws and a flat will show even less. But before you repaint you should lightly sand the walls to aid in adhesion. I would not use a flat in a bathroom with a shower in it as the moisture is just to much for it.

Built-in Breakfast Nook question

Lawrence is correct that there are no standards to adhere to so take the sides before you do anything else and temporarily nail or better yet clamp the back in place to check its comfort. Don't forget that there should be an average comfort range not just suited for some one person......
