Paul Viliott of PV Builders shows how an old basement window is replaced with a new one. Viliott first pulls out all the stops, cuts the sash cords, and removes the sash. Because the windows are so old, they are easy to remove. Viliott removes the sash weights from within the frame and fills the cavity with insulation. An adhesive caulk is applied and the window is put in place. Viliott checks to make sure the installed window is level. The pieces are then secured with screws. There is a small gap in the exterior, which Viliott fixes by installing a sliver of PVC in the gap, sealed with caulking.

Bob meets with Brian Kaley and Tim McFadden from Pella Windows to discuss the new fenestration that will be employed in the waterfront warehouse rehab project. Pella will be supplying windows that are architecturally similar to what was used in the original structure, a six-over-six-pane double-hung design. McFadden points out that the new windows are complete tear out and replacement models. The new windows have a 3-1/2-inch bottom rail that mimics the architectural style of the period. Pella's Kaley, on site to supervise the window installation, points out that the windows need a clean slate for installation. This requires the removal of the old window framing all the way down to the masonry. To secure the new window, the crew from Dino's Construction builds a wooden frame with 2-by-6 framing stock. With the window dry fit into place, Bob discusses the proper methods of insulating the gaps between the frame and the masonry.

Casement windows, windows that are attached to their frame by one or more hinges and usually have cranks, can need replacing over time due to wear and weathering. Here we replace a casement window and the shingles surrounding it.

Bob moves to the inside of the house to show the newly installed bay windows. He talks with Ken Henderson from Harvey Industries, a regional window company in the New England area. The windows are aluminum clad and pine inside. The glass in the window is low-e with krypton gas, which gives the window an Energy Star rating. Jack Silverio of J. Silverio & Co. Construction installed the windows. Silverio's family-owned business does residential work in the North Shore area. Henderson demonstrates how the windows can be opened into the home, allowing the front of the window to be washed from the inside. Bob notes that the new windows keep heat in and noise out.
