Bob meets homeowner Jeanne Sanviti-Masher to talk about the demands of the project and plans for the new mudroom. Sanviti-Masher says the new space is designed with a closet so family members can enter and shed wet or muddy clothes. The new bathroom will be tiled in unique, artisanal tiles from Trikeenan Tileworks in Keene, New Hampshire. Sanviti-Masher shows Bob some of the samples, included a fired glasstile that has colored glass embedded in the tiles that melts and becomes luminescent. She also explains that they will be using feature tiles in their design and shows Bob one of the samples.
Bob looks at the tiles selected for the bathroom with homeowner and contractor NIck Beasley. They first look at the hexagon tile on the floor that is well-suited to an 1890s home. Beasley then shows Bob the white subway tile for the main field of the wall and the decorative glasstile for the edges. All of the tile is from Daltile. With work yet to be done, Bob wishes Beasley and his wife good luck as they anticipate the due date for their baby in just one week.
Rob Shedrofsky from Davinci Stone explains the tiling process to Bob as the Porcelanosa walltile is installed in the bathroom. A glazed clay tile is being used on the wall, while the floor will be done in a porcelain tile that is super strong and only inch thick. The walltile is a Subway design, replicating the look of the New York Subway on a larger format. Shedrofsky explains how the datum line is used to create a tile layout that is centered from top to bottom and side to side for a pleasing look. The tiles are applied to the wall with an petroleum-based mastic and a -inch notch trowel. The mastic is less expensive than thinset, sets up quicky, and prevents sagging or dipping tiles. The tiles have an -inch joint that is held by spacers for 24 hours while the job cures. After 24 hours, the spacers are removed and an unsanded white grout is applied to blend the seams into the tile and give a sleek, urban appearance.
